Rosalyn Hurley Obituary

Rosalyn Marie (Walz) Hurley, 82, of Volga, passed away at her home on Monday, June 16th, 2025. She was born January 11, 1943, at Ft. Meade, South Dakota, to Rachel (Batchelder) and Roland Walz. Her first five years, she lived on a farm outside of Central City. Her elementary school years were at St. Joseph School, Garnavillo. She graduated from Strawberry Point High School, then Paris Beauty Academy, Cedar Rapids. Following graduation, she purchased Rachellen's Beauty Shop in Elkader and opened Rosalyn's Back Door Salon in Volga City. She completed 50 years as a cosmetologist, which included 18 years as a beautician at the Elkader Care Center.
She was united in marriage to Kenneth Joseph Hurley of Volga City, on June 7, 1965, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Strawberry Point. The couple moved to Volga and became members of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and were residents of Volga for 25 years, until the flood of 1999. In 2000, they purchased the family farm northeast of Volga.
Rosalyn enjoyed a variety of activities, being a domestic engineer, knitting, ceramics, crocheting, gardening, her flowers, horseback riding, Mother Nature and later years finding an interest in the art field. She also cherished spending time with friends, especially the Fitness Group.
Over the years, she was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Altar and Rosary Society, Volga Study Club, Chit Chat Club, the Volga River Riders and the Clayton County Artist Association.
Survivors include her two daughters, Rebecca (Scott) Rentschler of Volga, Kimberly Joe Hurley of Elkader; her grandchildren Bryton Boone (Carla) Rentschler, of Elkader and Courtlyn Rose Rentschler of Elkader; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Rosalyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Kenneth Joseph Hurley on July 14, 2007; siblings Eldon and Linda Walz, Marilyn (Joe) Bergan; niece Annette Walz; nephews Brad Bergan and Steve Walz and numerous aunts and uncles.
