Rosamond Ellen Sawyer Washenfelder, 98, of Nederland died Sunday, July 13, 2025. She was born on April 2, 1927, in Ipswich England, to Ruth Gosling Sawyer and Robert Sawyer.
She and her two sisters grew up in wartime Britain. After graduating high school, she worked as a clerk and secretary for Ranson, Sims and Jeffries Engineers where they made tanks for the war effort. Rosamond met the love of her life David Washenfelder during a blackout in the middle of an air raid. He was an American Army combat engineer who was stationed in England. They were married on June 9, 1945, in Ipswich, after the end of World War II. David was honorably discharged from the Army, and returned to his home in Casper, Wyoming.
Rosamond followed him several months later on the bride ship, M.S. John Ericsson. They made their home in Casper and started a family that would grow to include three boys and three girls. In 1966, they accepted a transfer to Mobil Oil Company and made Nederland their home. Rosamond was an excellent cook, known for her delicious bread, pies and family dinners. She was also a talented seamstress and sewed for all her children, she would eventually continue to use this talent by creating beautiful dresses, costumes and outfits for her grandchildren. She had a green thumb, enjoyed gardening and was able to grow anything. Rosamond cherished time with her family, finding great joy in family gatherings and time spent with her children and grandchildren. Her smile, love, quiet faithfulness and wisdom will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, David Washenfelder, Jr. and his wife, Betty; Robert Washenfelder and his wife, Debbie; Elizabeth Breaux and her husband, Cordell; Joan Sheehan and her husband, Mike; and close family friend, John Paul "Skipper" Flynn.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, David Washenfelder III and his wife, Thuy; Chad Washenfelder and his wife, Jessica; Matt Washenfelder and his wife, Leah; Katelyn Washenfelder; Megan Harrison and her husband, Hunter; Miranda Guidry and her husband, Taylor; great-grandchildren; Hunter James Harrison, Jr., Hope Harrison, Arielle Guidry, Felicity Guidry, Sophia Washenfelder, Mia Washenfelder, and Madelynn Washenfelder.
Rosamond is preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Robert Sawyer; sisters, Joyce Wakeling and Joan Gould; her husband, David Washenfelder, Sr., daughter, Rosamond Ruth Washenfelder; and son, Leslie Richard Washenfelder.
Rosamond was loved by her family and friends, and she will truly be missed.
Her graveside service will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, 618 Block Street, Port Neches, under the direction of Broussard's, 505 North 12 Street, Nederland.
