Rose Burnett Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jul. 16, 2025.
Rose Nell Koen Burnett passed away on July 14th at home with her daughter Beverly and granddaughter Rachel at her side. Rose Nell had been anticipating the 70th reunion of LubbockHigh School's Class of 1955 to be held in 2 weeks. Rose Nell's high school friends remained close until the end, meeting every month for lunch. Rose Nell attended every LHS '55 reunion where they always remembered Buddy Holly, their fellow Lubbock High Class of '55 classmate. Rose Nell was close friends with Echo McGuire, Buddy Holly's high school girlfriend, and she had many interesting stories to tell about Buddy.
Rose Nell Koen was born on December 11th, 1936, to Floyd Koen, Sr and Gertrude Martin Koen. She married Donald Bruce Burnett in June 1955. Together they had four children: D. Bruce Burnett, David Burnett (Marilyn), Donna Rose Denton, and Beverly Burnett. They had 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, with one more on the way.
Rose Nell grew up in the business her father started during the Depression, Koen Studios. After Rose Nell's mother retired and her brother Floyd, Jr, sold his share, Don Burnett ran the photography business and expanded into retail clothing with The Bridal Shoppe and Formal Wear and Hackel's.
Rose Nell ran The Bridal Shoppe for many years until she retired at age 73.
Rose Nell was an avid quilter and donated much of her time sewing quilts for charity. Rose Nell was also very generous and never hesitated to help her family and friends in need.
She was a direct descendant of Prudence E. Dunlap Koen, one of the children who survived the Mountain Meadows Massacre in 1857. Interested in preserving the memory of her ancestors, Rose attended the ceremony in 2011 to designate the Mountain Meadows Massacre site as a National Historic Landmark in Utah.
Like her husband, she never met a stranger and was very good at remembering names. She enjoyed conversation and always learned something interesting about the people she met. While in rehab at Crown Point, Rose made a point of remembering names and brightening the spirits of other patients.
Rose Nell is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Bruce's children are Summer & Rob Daniel and kids Creed, River, & Rixt. Skyler and Malina Burnett and kids Merrick, Morrah, & Mariel. And, Sawyer and Kelsey Burnett. David's children are Brian and Hope Burnett and kids Kinsley & Taylor. Austin and Brittney Burnett and kids Jax & Jett. Audrey and Ethan Hicks and kids Norah & Calvin. Donna Rose's children are Joseph Denton and Rachel Swan.
Rose Nell is also survived by her sister-in-law Janette Koen and nephews Kenneth, Keith, and Karl Koen (Traci). And by her sister-in-law Sue Burnett Walkup and her sons Chris and Kevin.
She was proceeded in death by her husband Donald B. Burnett and her brother Floyd Koen Jr.
A visitation will be held at 1:00 on Saturday, July 19th at Green Lawn Church of Christ. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 in the Green Lawn Church of Christ auditorium.
Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Lubbock, TX.
Services under the care of the Moore-Rose Funeral Home.

It was always a joy to see Rose-Nell at the South Plains Quilt Guild and the Friends of the Library. Her smile, kindness and intelligent conversation will always be a treasured memory for me. My sympathy goes out to her family, especially Rachel, who accompanied her to events and is so delightful.
My condolences,
Kathy Heppert
