Roy Eugene Adkins Sr., a cherished soul known for his unwavering strength and gentle heart, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, in Melvindale, MI, at the age of 77. Born on March 11, 1948, in Huntington, WV, to the late Wilford and Maude Adkins, Roy's life was a testament to resilience, love, and the joy found in simple pleasures.
Roy proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he performed missile maintenance alongside his brother who was also serving in the Army in Korea, Thomas Adkins. His dedication to his work continued throughout his life, as he built a career as a respected diesel engineer, a field where he was known for his expertise and reliability.
He married Joyce Lowe in 1970. Though they later divorced, Joyce remained a devoted, motherly presence to the children they shared as well as to his children from his next marriage-helping to create a loving and lasting blended family.
In 1982, Roy married the love of his life, the late Sabrina Adkins, and together they nurtured a family filled with love and laughter. Roy was a devoted father to Rachell (Kelly) Weathers, the late Roy (Michael) Adkins Jr., Jeffrey Perdue, Richard McCann, Autym (John) Ironside, Timothy Adkins, and Kimberly (Josh) Mitchell. His legacy includes 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life, though he was preceded in death by his son Roy Adkins Jr. and great-grandchild, the late Steven Rafferty Jr
Roy's home was always a haven for animals, reflecting his deep love and compassion for all creatures. His collection of coins was a hobby that brought him immense satisfaction, and his sarcastic wit, coupled with a blunt but down-to-earth demeanor, endeared him to all who knew him. Despite his tough exterior, Roy was a gentle soul who took great delight in driving his grandchildren to school and treating them to candy beforehand. His love for his children and grandchildren was the cornerstone of his life.
Among the many relationships he cherished, Roy held a special bond with his granddaughter and caregiver, Madison Adkins, who became his best friend. Together, they shared countless moments of laughter, understanding, and mutual support.
Roy's life was a beautiful illustration of what it means to be steadfast and tender-hearted. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to experience his love and his unassuming wisdom. As we bid farewell to Roy Eugene Adkins Sr., we celebrate a life well-lived, a man well-loved, and a legacy that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
