Roy Hughes Buck, 94, of Grantsboro, NC, passed away peacefully at home on July 4, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on September 7, 1930, in Grantsboro, Roy lived a full and faithful life defined by hard work, devotion to family, and an enduring love for the simple things. As a young boy, he worked on the family farm and later in the log woods before beginning a long and respected career hauling gasoline. He drove tankers for Cowell Oil Company and later became the proud owner of Hurry Back Service Station in Bayboro, which he operated for 13 years. He returned to gasoline hauling afterward and became affectionately known in the community as “the Gaspumper” until his retirement in March of 1995.
Roy’s life was grounded in faith and family. He loved the Lord, cherished his family deeply, and lived with a heart full of generosity and kindness. His passions were many — he loved to fish, tend his garden, and could spend hours mowing the yard, his all-time favorite activity. He was also an enthusiastic wrestling fan and took great joy in the sport.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Jacqueline Sadler Buck; his children, Ronnie Buck (Cindy), Ruth B. Lee (Ronnie), and Lisa Buck Smith; his daughter-in-law, Wanda B. Buck; sisters, Wilma Merchant and Hazel Alcock (Frank); stepbrother, Melvin Hunnings; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; his angel, Tim Ray; and two cherished bonus sons, Brad Price and Randy Arthur.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Hughes Buck and Lura Price Buck Hunnings; stepfather, Carlos Hunnings; stepbrother, David Hunnings; sister, Lois Riggs; brothers, Herman, Milon, and Jimmy Buck; his son, Roy Hughes Buck Jr.; and his daughter, Teresa Buck Arthur.
Roy’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Pruitt Health Hospice Care Team for their compassionate care and support.
A man of strong faith and deep roots, Roy’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A funeral service to honor Roy’s life will be held Tuesday, July 8th beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Daniels-Sadler Funeral Home Chapel. Private interment will be in Sandhill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
