Russell Kevin Hardaway was born on July 12, 1963, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Lerory and Iola Hardaway, who preceded him in death along with his brother Leroy Jr. Russ passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025 He leaves behind his beloved daughters Britney and Lisamarie (Michael), their mother Ronda, his cherished grandchildren Isaiah (Olvia) and Ella-Bleu, and his most treasured great-granddaughter, Ms. Iris.

As a young boy growing up in San Mateo, California, Russell was full of energy, curiosity, and joy. He spent countless afternoons playing football, baseball, basketball, and riding bikes through the neighborhood streets with his dear friends, exploring every corner of the community they called home. Those early years were filled with laughter, adventure, and the kind of bonds that created friendships that lasted his lifetime.

Russell found great joy and fulfillment in his work as a school bus driver for the San Mateo School District, a role he proudly held for over 25 years. Known for his reliability, warm smile, and the care he showed to every student, Russ took pride in safely guiding generations of children to and from school. After retiring from the district, he continued doing what he loved by joining Royal Coach, where his driving skills took him on new and exciting adventures. Among his most cherished experiences were the opportunities to drive NBA and NFL teams and even spent time on the road with the legendary John Madden, making unforgettable memories. Russ’s love for the open road, his dedication to his passengers, and the stories he gathered along the way were a true reflection of his spirited and hardworking nature, qualities he carried through his entire life.

He had a deep love for life’s simple pleasures—playing his bass, live concerts, fishing on a slough or in the ocean, playing the Lotto with hopeful excitement and dreams of grandeur, or savoring a plate of good BBQ, especially when surrounded by those he loved most. His friends and family meant everything to him.

One of his greatest joys in life was the birth of his daughter, Britney. His love for her ran deep and unwavering. He cherished every stage of her life and found great fulfillment in watching her grow into the remarkable woman she is. Seeing her walk across the stage to graduate from U.C. Davis was a moment that filled his heart with emotion. In his eyes, Britney was a shining light, and her achievements brought him immeasurable happiness and pride that he carried with him always.

Russ and Lisamarie shared a deep, unbreakable bond that began with a mutual love for sports and Squirt and grew into a powerful connection rooted in loyalty and family devotion. Russ never missed a chance to go fishing with his daughter, Lisamarie, and son-in-law, Michael, and he was always up for an impromptu dinner date. He was a constant source of support, always there to lend a helping hand and cheer Lisamarie on through all her accomplishments. Russ loved being a father to his two beautiful daughters.

He shared a special bond with his grandson, Isaiah, often spending hours talking sports, exchanging opinions, and reminiscing about their favorite games—conversations that naturally wove in bits of grandfatherly wisdom. With his granddaughter, Ella-Bleu, he found joy in admiring her artwork, always encouraging her creativity and proudly celebrating her talent, gently guiding her with words of support and insight.

Whether gathered for a family cookout or simply enjoying each other's company, Russ’s love for friends, family, conversation, and good food made every moment feel special. His warmth, his laughter, and the way he made others feel will be remembered forever.

Russell leaves behind a family who loved him dearly and will carry his memory in their hearts forever. He is survived by his brothers James, Matt, and Billy, and his sisters Sharon, Linda, and Tasha. Among his many beloved family members, his nieces Janee (Van) and Stephanie held a special place in his heart. He helped raise them during their younger years, forming a bond that was deep, lasting, and filled with love and guidance. He found great joy in seeing the paths they carved for themselves and often spoke of their achievements with admiration and love. Watching them grow into the women they are today brought him deep happiness.

Russ also leaves behind a host of lifelong friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins, each of whom was touched by his kindness, his sense of humor, and his generous spirit. His presence in our lives was a true blessing, and his memory will live on through the love he gave and the legacy he left behind.

"Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day—unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed, and forever dear." — Unknown
