Sarah Catherine "Cathi" Johnson, age 61, of Texico, NM, passed away on Thursday, July 24, 2025, after facing Alzheimer's with grace and dignity. Graveside service to be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at 10:00 A.M. at Plain Cemetery in Quay County located on the southeast corner of Quay Road AE and Quay Road 40. Officiating will be Curtis Allen.
Cathi was born on February 16, 1964, to Robert Charles Gentry and Bette Joyce (Blair) Gentry in
Clovis, NM. Even though she enjoyed the companionship of the family dog, affectionately called Major, she started to long for a sibling. She prayed hard for one, and a month before her eighth birthday, she was blessed with a sister! This was only the beginning of her devotion to prayer and her trusting relationship with the Lord. As time went on, Cathi decided she didn't like piano lessons but enjoyed playing volleyball and basketball in junior high and made the varsity volleyball team as a Clovis Wildcat. Before graduating in 1982, a young, persistent man, met Cathi at the fair one evening and decided she was "the one". His persistence paid off and after a two-week engagement, Jerry and Cathi married on October 16, 1982. Cathi loved being a wife and a support to Jerry. Soon after, she embraced another great role as being a mother when they were blessed with Joshua and Sarah. Carefully selected Precious Moments figurines were always gifted for their birthdays, reflecting their interests at that time. Along with children comes the numerous adventures and journeys of family vacations, athletic events, band concerts, livestock shows and other school events that Cathi was devoted to attending. However, going to the mountains was one of her favorite places to be with the quiet and coolness they provided. With all the traveling, she expressed that you could never go wrong stopping at a Schlotzsky's for an Original Sandwich, a bag of salt and vinegar chips and a lemonade. Meanwhile, Cathi spent many years working at the Texico Branch of The Citizens Bank of Clovis as a Teller and then eventually became an Account Specialist. Her customers were the highlight of her workday, and she delighted in making her highly anticipated cheese dip to share with her colleagues for their birthday celebrations. In 2011, Cathi was blessed with another promotion of becoming a grandmother and spent as much free time as possible to be with the grandchildren.
Like the flowers she planted in the spring, Cathi illuminated beauty and peace wherever she went. Her thoughtfulness, compassion and love for little things in life will greatly be missed. She truly was a Proverbs 31 woman.
Cathi is survived by her husband, Jerry Johnson of the house; one son, Joshua Johnson of Texico; one daughter, Sarah Gomez (Fernando) of Seminole, TX; five grandchildren, Hannah, Hadassah, Havah, Asaph and Baruch Gomez; father-in-law, Truman Johnson of Logan, NM; a sister, Jennifer Stephens of Clovis NM; an aunt, Sandi Rogers (Shelby) of Argyle, TX, as well as cousins and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; mother-in-law, Bobbi Johnson; brother-in-law, John Stephens and an uncle, Ted Blair I.
The family would also like to express their appreciation for the compassion shown and the help provided by the Compassus staff.
