Simon "Si" was born December 1, 1936, in Corsica, South Dakota, to Cornelius and Margaret (Buist) Schoon. He was home schooled through the eigth grade and worked on the family farm. In 1955 when Si turned eighteen, he moved to West Michigan, and his parents followed him in 1957. Si was set up on a roller-skating blind date with Doris Eding. They later married on October 12, 1962, and raised their children in Zeeland. Si worked for many years at Bonn-Hydro Aluminum until his retirement in 2001. Si and Doris are also long-time members of First Reformed Church of Zeeland.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Doris, their children and grandchildren: Lynnae and Phil Achterhof (Morgan, Brennan), Craig and Jennifer Schoon (Jenna, Caleb, Chloe). He was preceded in death by his parents and also his brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Gleyon Eding, and Marietta Molewyk.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at First Reformed Church of Zeeland, 125 East Lincoln Ave., Zeeland MI 49464. Visiting hours will be 5:00-7:00 PM, Monday, at the Yntema Funeral Home, 251. State Street, Zeeland MI 49464. Interment will be in Zeeland Cemetery (Felch Street). Memorial contributions may be made to American Cander Society and the Holland Hospital-Heart Failure Support Group.

He was my coach in little league in Zealand in 1966. I was 9 years old. Our record was 4-0 and 2 ties. I still have the team picture. I played high school and college baseball so he must have been a pretty good coach. Thanks coach Schoon. RIP
