Obituary published on Legacy.com by Price Funeral Home from Jul. 28 to Jul. 30, 2025.
Steven Fred Brettmann was born April 27, 1955 to Alvin and Flora (Hofts) Brettmann. He was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler on May 22, 1955. Steve grew up on the family farm southeast of Deshler with his parents and younger brother Scott. As a child he loved playing cowboys, Army, football and softball with Scott and cousins. Steve attended Peace Lutheran school through the eighth grade and was confirmed in 1969 at Peace Lutheran Church. Steve enjoyed being a member of Deshler Boy Scout Troop 307 and was very proud that he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Deshler High School in 1973. He participated in football and basketball. As a freshman backup quarterback he earned the nickname "Broadway Joe", white shoes and all. While in high school, Steve picked up photography. He was often seen wandering the halls of DHS, at ballgames and other events with his camera around his neck. While in college and for years after he was a part-time photographer for the Picture Man out of Lincoln.
Steven went on to attend the University of Nebraska where he studied agronomy and graduated with a degree in agriculture. After graduation Steve went back to the family farm and worked alongside his father for many years. Steve loved to grow crops, but probably loved growing flowers and potted plants even more than corn and soybeans. He had a real green thumb that he got from his mother. He could tell you anything you needed to know about flowers and plants.
Steve was an avid reader, especially history, and he stored a lot of information in his mind. Steve was a longtime season-ticket holder for Nebraska football games and also enjoyed Husker volleyball. Steve also enjoyed hunting and shooting sports.
Steve's life changed dramatically in December 2022 when he suffered a stroke that impaired the right side of his body. Although he worked hard in therapy, he did not recover enough to be able to live on his own. Steve moved to Pathfinder Senior Living in Fremont in the spring of 2023 where he could be close to Scott and his family. Despite his predicament, God blessed him with a positive attitude and good spirits.
Recently, Steven's health declined and became too much to overcome. Steven went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 25, 2025, at Dunklau Gardens in Fremont, Nebraska. Steve found comfort knowing he would be with his Lord Jesus.
Steve will be remembered by many for having a big heart. He was loyal to family and friends.
Steve is survived by his brother Scott, sister-in-law Libby, nephews Jameson and Jackson and niece Shelby, along with cousins, relatives and special friends.
Memorials are designated to the Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler.
