CONWAY - Susan Long Flythe, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on May 16, 2025, in Conway, North Carolina, at the age of 67. Born on July 8, 1957, in Halifax County, North Carolina, Susan lived a life filled with love, dedication, and service to her family and community.
Susan spent her career nurturing young minds and bodies as a Lunchroom Manager at Northeast Academy in Lasker, North Carolina, ensuring that students received not only nutritious meals but also a warm smile each day. Agriculture was another love of hers, as she also worked as a farm assistant for Boxey and Chick Flythe. By far the position she loved the most was being "MeMa" to her grandchildren. Susan was the heart of her family, providing warmth, wisdom, and unconditional love.
Susan enjoyed watching college basketball and the UNC Tarheels were hands down her favorite team. (Go Heels!) She could often be found cheering them on while sporting the classic Carolina Blue. She also enjoyed spending time at the beach with family and friends and attending Carolina Beach Music Festivals. Embarking on cruises with Boxey to destinations such as Mexico, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, St. Thomas, St. Martin, and the Dominican Republic, and visiting Key West also brought her immense happiness and cherished memories.
She was an active member of the Zion Methodist Church in Conway, where she participated in the Methodist Women's Group, serving faithfully as treasurer. Her commitment to her faith and community was evident in her actions and dedication. Susan's legacy of love, laughter, and service will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
Preceding Susan in death were her parents, Lorraine and Windell Long; her sister-in-law, Betty Anne Long; and her father-in-law, James E. Flythe, Sr.
Susan is survived by her devoted husband of forty-seven years, James "Boxey" Flythe, Jr.; her son Jeremy Flythe and his wife Jen; her daughter Melissa Flythe; and her treasured grandchildren: Sloan, Sadie, Stella, Walker, Maddie, and Myles. She also leaves behind her loving brothers, Leslie "Les" Long and Jesse "Bubba" Long and his spouse Anita, as well as her cherished aunt, Marjorie Whitley, and her loving mother-in-law, Virginia Flythe. Susan has a host of extended family members including several nieces, a nephew, many great nieces, great nephews, and many special cousins will also fondly remember her.
The family will receive friends during a visitation on Sunday, May 18, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Garrett-Sykes Rich Square Chapel. A funeral service to honor Susan's life will be held on Monday, May 19, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Methodist Church in Conway, North Carolina.
