SUSIE FENTON Obituary
Susie W. Fenton was born January 20, 1958, the sixth of nine children, in Columbus Mississippi. She was the daughter of George W. Fenton and Irene Smith Fenton. She attended Coleman Elementary School and Cook Middle School of Columbus Mississippi. Susie was an active child. She was a tomboy that loved hanging out in the neighborhood on hot summer days playing with the girls and boys. Susie was very competitive. She could climb the highest trees, shoot marbles and play baseball as well as any boy. She was also awesome in girls games, including Hopscotch and Jacks. She was fierce and "took no prisoners" in games and/or sports. But she also had her girlish side and learn how to press hair when she was 11 years old because she liked her hair "bone straight," at a time when that was not the fashion name for pressed hair.
At the age of fourteen years, she encountered a viral infection that left her paralyzed. She was hospitalized for weeks before she came home to spend the rest of her life using a wheelchair.
Susie fought her way back and was homeschooled, tutored by Luberta Phinesee-Taylor, she completed middle school. In 1975, Susie's parents relocated the family, to live near their older brothers and sisters in Indianapolis. Susie graduated from Arsenal Technical High School. During that time, she received the leadership award from the Daughters' of the American Revolution Society.
Susie attended and graduated from Marian University, on the Dean's List, with a degree in Business Administration. She was offered a job at Methodist Hospital in the business office; however, she decided to stay home to encourage and teach her nieces and nephews so they too could excel in school.
Susie was baptized and joined First Samuel at a young age. She loved to travel, especially via airplane. Among her favorite places were Las Vegas, Orlando and Myrtle Beach. Her hobbies were writing stories, cataloging family history, watching classical movies, Rugrats and Boondock cartoons and the Dallas Cowboys. "Quiet everyone," when the Cowboys played, she would say "I got to focus, I got to cheer for my team!"
In 2010, it became necessary for Susie to use not only oxygen but be placed on a vent at night. This required skilled nursing care to come into her home and become a part of her daily life. With the encouragement and care from our mom, her siblings and family support, Susie made the adjustments. She continued to be a Blessing to our families, encouraging our kids and giving out advice as well as her opinions. She believed in Family Unity!
