Thayer A. Wood, 84, of Matthews, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025.

Born on January 24, 1941, in Big Rapids, Michigan, Mr. Wood was the beloved son of the late Thayer Nathaniel Wood and Evelyn Erickson Wood.

From September 1960 through June 1963, Mr. Wood served in the U.S. Army, Army Security Agency. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Conservation from the University of Michigan in 1966. He entered Government Service in 1967, as a Management Intern with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in Washington, D.C. Mr. Wood accepted an appointment in 1970 as Staff Assistant with the Committee on Appropriations, House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. In October 1972, he was appointed Special Assistant with the Department of Treasury, Bureau of the Public Department and in March 1974, Assistant Director of Field Operations of the Financial Management Branch. On December 3, 1978, Mr. Wood became the Director of the Division of Accounts and Reconcilements. He dedicated 30 years to his career until he retired.

His lifelong love of nature was evident in everything he did-from his career to his hobbies. He was an avid gardener, hiker, and outdoorsman who found peace and joy among trees, trails, and the changing seasons.

The family requests that donations be made to the Charlotte Rescue Mission in honor of Mr. Wood.

Mr. Wood is survived by his loving wife, Juanita Wood of Matthews, NC; children, Brian Wood (Holly) of Canton, OH, Karen (Matt) Tollefson of Fargo, MI; brothers, Don (Jane) Wood of Phoenix, AZ, Steve (Mary) Wood of Naples, FL; grandchildren, Charles Tollefson, Sam Tollefson, Jacob Wood, Patience German, Chevelle German, Jacob German, Samantha German.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Thayer and Evelyn Wood.
