Thomas N. Burkhart, a lifelong resident of Pittsford, Michigan, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, July 27, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Verna Burkhart, and brothers Cecil Jr., Dick Trine, and Tommy Trine.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Tom's life was rooted in kindness, generosity, and a deep appreciation for life's simple joys.

Tom was born on August 14, 1934, in Hudson, Michigan, to Cecil and Alice (Anderson) Burkhart.

In 1955, Tom married the love of his life, Peggy Davis. This year would have marked their 70th wedding anniversary-a remarkable milestone that speaks to their unwavering love and partnership. Together, they built a home filled with laughter, hard work, and unconditional support.

Tom was the proud father of three children-Lisa (Frank) Hunt, Lori (Doug) Borton, and Tracy (John) Bowman-and his legacy lives on in his eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, who were truly the joy of his life. His face would light up at the sound of their laughter, and his stories, hugs, and quiet wisdom will be treasured for generations.

A hardworking and entrepreneurial spirit, Tom was the founder and longtime owner of the Pittsford Grain Elevator, where he served local farmers and neighbors with dedication and integrity. He also enjoyed a successful career with Goodyear and later worked at Hillsdale College, where he took pride in contributing to the community in meaningful ways -especially by getting to know students and staff, and sharing plenty of laughs and lighthearted jokes along the way.

Tom was also a proud member of the Pittsford Volunteer Fire Department, always ready to lend a hand when his neighbors were in need. Whether it was through work, service, or friendship, Tom's life was defined by helping others.

He had a passion for gardening and spent countless hours tending his vegetable and flower beds. With a green thumb and a giving heart, he shared his harvests generously and often left a basket of produce on a neighbor's porch, no note needed.

Tom will be remembered not only for the beauty he cultivated in his garden but for the kindness he sowed in the lives of those around him. His gentle spirit, warm smile, and steady presence touched all who knew him.

Though he is no longer with us, his love and generosity will continue to bloom in the hearts of all who know him.

Funeral services for Tom Burkhart will be held Friday, August 1, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Josh Good and Dr. Samuel Wickard officiating. Interment will follow at Leonardson Cemetery in Pittsford. The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday from 5:00-7:00 PM at the funeral home and on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of service.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Hillsdale United Brethren Church.

I want to express my sincere condolences to the Burkhart family, Peggy, Lisa, Lori and Tracy that I knew and to all the related family members who are feeling the loss of a great man in their life. It's been a long time since I had last seen Tom however my memory and minds eye can clearly see, hear and remember what a wonderful man he was for as long as I can remember. His strong voice and constant kindness of words let me know he was a good friend to all of my family especially my Mom and Dad. I wish I had a photo of him with my folks to share. May your memories of him be forever in your heart with peace and happiness.
