Thomas E. Meverden, 81, of Birnamwood, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 21, 2025, at his home.
Tom was born on February 26, 1944, in Wausau. The 17th of 20 children of Clarence and Theresa (Beck) Meverden. Growing up, Tom spent the summers of his teenage years working for his uncle at Meverden Amusements Carnival where he learned to juggle. Tom graduated from Birnamwood in 1962 and always joked about how he had more siblings than his graduating class.
On October 28, 1967, Tom was united in marriage to Sandra 'Sandy' Skodinski at St. Philomena Catholic Church, Birnamwood.
Tom was a jack-of-all trades and could help with just about anything. He used these skills when working for the Shawano County Highway Department for 35 years.
After retiring, Tom spent his days enjoying simple pleasures-"putzing around" his garage, fixing things, woodworking and checking on his beloved cabin. A true handyman, he was always the first to lend a tool, offer help, or share his knowledge with others. His generosity and spirit of giving were part of what made him so beloved.
Tom was a man who lived his life with purpose, joy, and a commitment to his family and friends. Whether he was spending time at his cabin, playing cards, telling jokes, sharing stories about growing up with 19 siblings, or coloring Easter eggs with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, Tom made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
A lifelong lover of the outdoors, Tom found peace and happiness in hunting and spending time with those he cherished most. It was always said that at the Meverden house, you could have a cup of coffee, eat breakfast, get a haircut and your mower blades sharpened, all in one day. His passion for cooking breakfast and frying venison for family, friends, and neighbors became a cherished tradition. Tom's memory was as sharp as ever-he could always recall important dates, such as birthdays and ages, and special moments that shaped his life and the lives of those around him.
Tom is survived by his wife, Sandy; two children, Kelly (Todd) Schmidt and Scott (Jill) Meverden; six grandchildren, Logan Schmidt, Lilly (Matt) Schumacher, Mason, Evan, Carson and Connor Meverden; two great-grandchildren, Lucy and Wyatt Schumacher; siblings, John (Helen) Meverden, Dennis (Sharon) Meverden, Rose (Charlie) Radke, Carol (Ed) Resch, Betty Meverden and Barbara (Doug) Praslowicz; sister-in-law, Donna Meverden and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Irvin (Alicia) Meverden, Robert (June) Meverden, Elnora Meverden, Irma (Frank) Martin, Eugene (Anna) Meverden, Ruth (Chuck) Tafelski, Dorothy (Dan) Sekorski, Raymond (Rosie) Meverden, June (Vilas) King, William Meverden, Mary Meverden, Henry Meverden and Irene (Ray) Ruenger.
A Celebration Gathering will be from 4 PM until 8 PM on Monday, July 28, 2025, at Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home in Birnamwood. A private family service will be held.
