Thomas Carey Smith, named after his humorous grandfather, continued his comedic tradition from December 24, 1966, until Saint Patrick's Day of the year 2025.
Born at St Francis Hospital in Evanston, Tom spent his childhood in Rogers Park with his loving parents and brother and sisters.
Moving as only Eagles can, Tom and his family resided in two wonderful homes along Estes Avenue, a street full of friends, just a few blocks away from his beloved grade school parish of Saint Margaret Mary. He enjoyed baseball at Pottawattomie Park and summers at Leone Beach.
Tom spent most of his childhood playing with his friends in Rogers Park. And when he and his family moved to Washington DC, Tom made more deep friendships at Gonzaga College High School, where he studied, played football, and became class president of his 1985 class. His friends from SMM and 19 Eye Street were his greatest treasures.
After graduating from Loyola College in Baltimore, Tom started his career covering news at the United States Capitol and worked in newsrooms and on various political campaigns.
His concern and compassion for the less fortunate taught by his beloved parents and exemplified by his hero, Fr. Horace B. McKenna, SJ, were at the core of who Tom Smith tried to be daily.
He loved his parents, brother, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and we loved him. He brought us so much joy and laughter.
He was a lover of arts, music and history.
May the four winds blow you home again as you return back to where it all begins.
Beloved son of Jack and Marilyn, née Carey; loving brother of Mary Jo Msall and Maureen (Ivan Gazidis), Jack, and Maggie Smith; fun uncle of Lucy (Simcha Barkai), Camille, and Matilda (Nico Banks) Msall, Costa and Aidan Gazidis, and Conor Smith; dear nephew of Bill Smith, Deborah Corey Smith, Marilyn Shiel Smith, and Jim Carey.
Visitation, Monday, March 24, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial, 10:30 a.m., at Holy Child Jesus Catholic Parish (St. Margaret Mary Church), 2324 W. Chase Ave., Chicago.
Interment private.

I knew Tom at JSS school where he worked in the classroom with our youngest students. He loved those kids. I will miss our "consultations" when he asked me about health issues. He never failed to say "thank you" Blesssings to Tom and all his family. Nurse Geri

Tom, God bless you. I met Tom in 2015 during a successful Aldermanic campaign in the 41st Ward. He was a tremendous worker and without a doubt had "The Gift of the Gab", people in the precincts loved him. I regret the last few years I haven´t had contact with him. May God Rest your Soul Tom. Dear Smith Family, I'm so sorry for the loss of Tom. I have so many great memories growing up with him, going to SMM with him. Playing nerf football on Armstrong school lot, sleep overs at his house, Aunt Margie taking us on small trips. His big smile and laughter. I last saw him at Pepe Lopez's mother's funeral. I told him I missed him and loved him. He will be always in my heart and mind. Rest my friend in peace, you are home and I will see you again. Love, John McGuire.

Tommy was a very deep thinker and was always wondering about life and our missions in this life. We shared a great love of our Chicago sports teams, especially grandpa´s love of the Cubs. Well miss you on opening day, but I´m sure you and grandpa can bring home another WS trophy soon

Tom Smith...

I don't know even where to begin. Four years of Loyola was a blip on the screen. I got to know Tom a lot better after college when I moved to Bethesda. I was only there for a year but spent a lot of time with him and other Loyola friends. I will never forget when I got a call from him on a fall day in 1999 asking me what I was doing for lunch. He practically came to pick me up at Fort McHenry in Air Force One ... so the story goes. He put me in a receiving line next to the Mayor of Baltimore, Martin O'Malley and the Baltimore County Executive, Dutch Ruppersberger.

I shook President Bill Clinton's hand as we swiftly moved to the motorcade that was about to take us to the Baltimore convention center where President Clinton addressed the NAACP Convention. Afterwards, I had a moment with President Clinton and he asked me about my love for New Orleans music. A very special moment for me made possible by a very special friend of mine.

Tom Smith - I love you and will miss you, Brother. May you rest in peace.

By the way, most exciting lunch I have ever had without eating a damn thing.

I played rugby with Tom at Loyola in the 80s. A great leader on the field and off, he had a presence you could feel and a never quit attitude - regardless of the score he gave 100% for his teammates. He loved Loyola Rugby and Loyola loved him back. "With you" always. I miss you already.
