Tommy Harper, age 80, of Fordyce, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, teacher and coach, Tommy left behind a legacy of faith, dedication and service to others.
Born on August 24, 1944 In Calion, Arkansas, Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Bonnie Jean Nance Harper and his brother, Kirby Harper.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Dell Harper; his son, Brae Harper and daughter in law, Candace and his cherished grandson, Riggs Harper, whom he referred to as his "Rising Star." He is also survived by his brothers Billy Harper (Lynda) and John "Butch" Harper (Lorraine), as well as extended family members, former students and dear friends.
Tommy dedicated 39 years of his life to education as a teacher and coach, serving as a mentor and father figure to countless young people. Tommy coached basketball in Thornton, Kingsland, Hampton and Fordyce. He believed deeply in the value of hard work, integrity, and faith in God. Those who knew him will remember his unwavering commitment to shaping lives, both in the classroom and on the court and his gentle spirit rooted in love and service. His was a life well lived, full of purpose, love and quiet strength. He will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be Tuesday 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Benton Funeral Home in Fordyce. A celebration of Tommy's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Benton Funeral Home in Fordyce with Elder Paul Cayce and Rev. Rickey Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery near Bearden. Memorials may be made to Fordyce Methodist Church. To sign the online register visit www.bentonfuneralhome.net.
