Creston - Trudy Ann (Painter) Shafer, 88, passed away on July 23, 2025 at her home near Creston, Ohio. She was born in Hershey, Pennsylvania on March 10, 1937 to Paul and Violet (Umberger) Painter. She was the oldest of seven children and grew up in Eastern Pennsylvania. She attended Hershey High School and graduated as a Registered Nurse from Polyclinic Hospital in Harrisburg.

She met Homer Shafer while on a trip to Cleveland, Ohio. They married on May 30, 1959 in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Emily Painter and Daniel Landis, in the Palmyra Church of the Brethren in Palmyra, Pennsylvania.

Homer and Trudy set up housekeeping near Creston, Ohio. They were members of the Chippewa Church of the Brethren where they served as deacons. Trudy was a homemaker for a number of years and then worked as an RN at Dunlap Memorial Hospital in Orrville.

Trudy was an avid quilter and made many quilts for family and for charity. She gardened and canned produce all her life. She was active in the Women's Fellowship at the Chippewa Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by her three children: John Shafer of Middleburg, Virginia, Annette Shafer of Wooster and Daniel Shafer of Creston; three brothers: John (Mary) of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, Robert (Sharyn) of Petroleum, West Virginia, Gary (Carol) Painter of Hershey, Pennsylvania and a sister Ruth Painter of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Her parents, a sister Emily Landis, brother-in-law Daniel Landis and brother, Kenneth Painter died previously.

Visitation will be at Auble Funeral Home in Orrville on Friday, August 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Visitation will also be held at the Chippewa Church of the Brethren on Saturday, August 2 at 10:00 to 11:00 AM, and Celebration of Life service will begin at 11:00 AM.

Gifts in lieu of flowers may be given to the Chippewa Church of the Brethren, 10230 Honeytown Road, Creston, Ohio 44217 or Wooster LifeCare Hospice, ohioshospice.org.
