Oberlin- It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Vergie Monceaux Granger, a woman of remarkable strength, grace and faith. Vergie passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at the age of 93.
Funeral services for Vergie Monceaux Granger, will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 1:00PM in Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church of Oberlin. Father Pradeep Gali will officiate. Burial will follow at Oberlin Cemetery under the direction of Ardoin/Allen Parish Funeral Home of Oberlin.
The family will receive visitors at Allen Parish Funeral Home-Oberlin Chapel beginning Tuesday, July 8, 2025, from 8:00AM until time of service. The Holy Rosary will be prayed at 12:00 Noon followed by a Christian burial at 1:00 PM.
Vergie was born on March 1, 1932, in the town of Gueydan, LA where she graduated from Gueydan High School in 1950. Following graduation she married her high school sweetheart, Weston Monceaux. In 1957, they moved to Oberlin, LA with 4 small children Ricky, Gregory, Sheryl and Lil Weston for farming opportunities. Vergie befriended Bertha Smith, who was a great friend and comfort, while she adjusted to her new home. Following their move they had two additional children: Marvin and Patrick.
Vergie faced life's challenges with courage and strength during her time as a homemaker and caretaker where she provided care for her mother and brother until their deaths. Additionally, she provided care for her husband, Weston, who passed away in 1991 after 41 years of marriage. Because of her own experienced difficulties, she exhibited great compassion for the poor and impoverished. Her joy came from gatherings with all her family and friends.
Vergie went on to marry Dreau Granger, where she embraced his three daughters Mariah, Becky and Joanie. For 14 years Vergie and Dreau enjoyed friends, family and traveling until Dreau's passing in 2013.
Vergie was an active member of Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, Ladies Altar Society, and a founding member of the Rosary Group in 1969. She decorated the church for all liturgical celebrations. She also enjoyed traveling to spiritual sites like Lordes, France, and Medjugorje. But for the highlights of her spiritual travel, she did not have to venture far from home, where in New Orleans, LA she was able to see Pope John Paul II and in Lafayette, LA, Mother Theresa; she deeply admired both.
Vergie was an active member of the Allen Parish Homemakers Club where she won many awards in designing, constructing clothes, and preparing some of her favorite recipes. Also, she had a green thumb and grew the most beautiful Bougainvillea's and Ferns.
Both Vergie and Weston were instrumental in keeping their 1950 Gueydan class connected. They continued to have class reunions every 5 years. As of her passing the remaining 5 class members were still in touch.
Vergie is survived by her children, Ricky Monceaux, Gregory (Charlon) Monceaux, Sheryl Banks, Marvin Monceaux, Patrick Monceaux; daughter-in-law, Naomi Monceaux; 16 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Vergie was preceded in death by husbands, Weston Monceaux Sr. and Dreau Granger; son, Weston Monceaux Jr.; granddaughter, Jocelyn Monceaux; and stepdaughter, Joannie Granger.
Isaiah 40:31 - But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on the wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.
