Wade Anthony Chio was born on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, December 8, 1947 in Toledo, Ohio and died on the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, June 28, 2025 at Scottsdale Village Square Memory Care Facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. Thus, he was born belonging to Mary and his Blessed Mother to the end.
Wade lived a life rich with experiences, contributions, and a spirit that ignited laughter and wisdom in all who had the pleasure of knowing him. An accomplished scholar, Wade earned a Master's Degree in Earth Science from Bowling Green State University and an MBA/CPA from Miami University in Ohio. Engaged by his brilliance and humor, it was his sincere love and concern for others that made Wade a "standout" professor. He blessed students and peers alike during his teaching career at Miami University in Ohio, College of Saint Benedict, St. John's University, Adams State College, and Arizona State University where he taught accounting information systems. He was an avid "rockhound" who loved digging for agates, crystals, and gemstones.
Wade's life was not without its sacrifices, as he served as First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force as a Combat Intelligence Officer during the Vietnam War from 1971 - 1973. He worked with the legendary SR-71, providing Intelligence that led to the freeing of prisoners of war. Later he shared his expertise as an Assistant Professor of Economics at the Air Force Academy. This proud chapter of his life, marked by dedication and courage, showcased his commitment, not only to his country, but also to the advancement of knowledge, inspiring the next generation of leaders.
God uses all of our past, the good and the bad of it, to prepare us for the present day. Wade's love of the poor, with a special heart towards military veterans, culminated in his forming Our Lady of the Streets homeless ministry with the love of his life, Carolyn. Together they personally served countless homeless, one-on-one throughout the Phoenix Metropolitan area, providing care packages, clothing, Bibles, and religious objects, and, most importantly, conversations that dignified the homeless as children of God. Many miracles were experienced.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wade Willard and Marian Chio, and a brother, Terry Chio. Wade is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Carolyn Doughty; his brothers, Tom (Marlene) and David (Debby) Chio; as well as a brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews; and countless friends. Ever focused on "paying it forward", Wade worked for years on a book that was a testament of his Catholic faith. Although he was unfortunately unable to bring this book to publication, he published "A Rosary Novena for Our Times" which demonstrates his love for all life from conception until natural death, for justice for the poor and marginalized.
We have lost a loving and faithful husband, brother, and friend, who was devoted to his Catholic faith and his family. He was a true "gem" in our lives, and we are thankful to have been blessed by his presence.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Wade's memory to St Mary's Food Bank, The Society of St. Vincent De Paul, and/or Life Choices Women's Clinic.
