Walter entered the US Navy in March of 1956 training at the 9th Naval District at Great Lakes, Illinois. Serving with Company 181 on the USS Caloosahatchee AO-98, he spent 1 year and 6 months on the ship as a cook which also took him across the Artic Circle.
