Wanda Marie Lundy (née Mathews) was born December 26, 1940, to Georgia (née Still) and Theo Mathews in Yonkers, Oklahoma, a small community in Wagoner County in Oklahoma, most of which had been lost to Lake Gibson when it was filled in 1933. Dad teased mom that she was born in a town that doesn't exist.
Wanda was one of several children, including from prior marriages. The family moved to Ajo, Arizona, while Wanda was in school, so mom was a Red Raider at Ajo High School. Another family which had moved to Ajo from Oklahoma around the same time was the Lundy's. Wanda met and ultimately married (September 16, 1960) Bill Lundy in Ajo. Bill had a daughter, Suzette, with his first wife, Yvette, who was lost in a tragic automobile accident just outside of Ajo.
Wanda and Bill made their home in Ajo and had a daughter, Camie, in 1961, followed by a son, Willie (aka Bill) in 1962. In 1966/7, the family moved to Toquepala, Peru, so that Bill could work at the open pit mine there which was then being operated by Phelps Dodge. After about a year, the family moved back to the United States: first to Ajo for a few months, but ultimately landing in the Town of Kearny, Arizona, where the family remains rooted today. The kids went to Ray High School (Go, Bearcats!), and mom was a Bearcat fan to the end.
Wanda worked for Mountain Bell (the original "phone company") for many years beginning in her early 20's and finishing with her retirement. She was a fixture at the phone company office in Kearny, but could also be found at community events, school sports and creative arts events over the years.
Wanda was an avid bowler, and enjoyed bowling for fun with her family or competitively with her chosen team(s) that would make annual pilgrimages to the national bowling championships - she visited many exciting locations and collected lots of photographs, memories and souvenirs. She also enjoyed ocean cruising, usually with friends and family groups.
Wanda became involved in the local parish of the Catholic Church late in her life, and it was there that she was able to help others in a greater way, working with various organizations in and outside of the Catholic Church. She found this work fulfilling and it provided her with the social interaction she needed.
Grandchildren and great grandchildren were her joy and she threw herself into tutoring and mentoring and strove to make a difference in their lives, one day at a time.
Wanda Lundy lived life on her terms, and she lived her life with integrity and with independence. She was confident in her beliefs and in her knowledge of life and people. She did not suffer fools gladly, but she loved being here with all of us and she made a difference in all our lives. Unapologetically. We are grateful for everything she gave us.
Wanda Lundy passed from this world on July 13, 2025. Wanda was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and many of her siblings. Wanda is survived by her brother and sister, many cousins and nieces and nephews, her children, grandchildren and SO MANY GREAT GRANDCHILDREN - the loves of her life.
The family will hold a private service at a future date.
