Alfred Whitby George passed away on July 9, 2025, at his home in Albany, Texas. His memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Albany, followed by burial at the Albany Cemetery.
He was born in Albany on December 13, 1936 to Alfred Merriweather George and Bettye Marjory Whitby George. He grew up in Albany and graduated from Albany High School in 1955. He then attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, graduating from there in 1959. He spent the next 20 years in the U.S. Army and retired from the Army in 1979. He then went to work with Hughes Aircraft and retired from Hughes in 1996. After retiring he returned home to Albany. He married Hazel Doris Gardner George on October 31, 1964.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Doris Gardner George, in 1994.
Whitby is survived by his daughter, Bettye Whitby George Anderson, her husband Kevin and their three sons: Creedence Anderson and his wife Tamara, along with their children Evelyn, Alfred, and Chaya; Forrest Anderson and his wife Jillian, and their daughters Karia and Hazel; and Lorenzo Anderson and his wife Jolyn Landis Anderson. He is also survived by his stepchildren: Sherri Kelsch and her husband Rick, and Sherri's son Clay Adams; Fred Pruitt and his wife Debbie; and Lacey Thomas. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Jim Tom George, and his sister, Louann George.
