Wilber Gruben, born on December 23, 1942, in Rotan, Texas, to the late Alvin and Vera Gruben, passed away on July 14, 2025. He is remembered fondly by many for his contributions in pharmaceutical sales, a career he enjoyed for many years before his retirement. Wilber graduated from Rotan High School and later attended Texas Tech, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree that would support his professional endeavors.
Wilber had a deep love for God and his family. Those who knew him well described him as a “Dad to everybody in the community.” He was a dedicated deacon and taught Bible study for 40 years at Cross Road Baptist Church. His involvement in the church and the Gideon Organization reflected his commitment to his faith and community.
Known for his great sense of humor, Wilber never met a stranger. He was kind and intelligent. Much of his early years were dedicated to helping kids in the community. He delighted in living a simple country life, spending time caring for his cows and attending stock shows with his children, Gregory and Evette, fishing, writing poetry, and photography. He was a seriously dedicated fan of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Wilber is survived by his wife of 22 years, Mary Gruben, and her children, Beth, David, George, John, and Julie Hall.
He is also survived by his grandson, Clancey Gruben, and great-grandson, Waylon Gregory Gruben, as well as his daughter, Evette Peterson, and her children, Madison and Gage Peterson, and one brother, Bobby Gruben.
Wilber is predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Carol Ann Gruben, and their son, Gregory Gruben; sisters, Melva Dean Jones, Georgie Upshaw, Vera Ellen McCombs, and Laverne Upshaw; and brothers, Glen Gruben and Charles Gruben.
Visitation for Wilber will be held on July 22, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, located at 201 N. McKinley Ave, Rotan, TX 79546. This will be followed by a Funeral Service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the same location. Wilber's legacy of love, faith, and humor will continue to inspire all who knew him.
