Richard T. Kovacs
1937 - 2025
Richard Thomas Kovacs "Dick", 87, of Newtown, CT, passed away suddenly on October 8, 2025. He was Born in New Brunswick, NJ on October 24, 1937, son of Michael and Theresa Bohar Kovacs, raised by his grandmother, Katherine. He was predeceased by his loving wife and partner in life, Margaret, of 59 years. He was a beloved member of the Newtown community for over 48 years.
He is survived by his son, Thomas, and his wife, Maureen, of Washington, CT, and his beloved daughter, Wanda McGarry of Danbury; and predeceased daughter, Katherine Alice. He was an adoring grandfather to his granddaughters, Samantha and Tierney. Richard is also survived by his brothers, King and his wife, Claire, and Stephen of Hamilton, New Jersey, a sister, Anna, and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by our beloved Henry Breese and Loretta Rivera.
Richard served in the U.S. Airforce for 13 years, with numerous tours to Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Europe, Middle East, Japan and Canada. Richard and Margaret started Kovacs Construction Corporation in 1972. Dick's strong work ethic, leadership, and deep commitment to public service defined much of his life. He was a long-time member of the Construction Institute and International Water Environment Federation. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Margaret throughout the US and to their favorite places, Bethany Beach, Delaware and St. Maarten.
A man of deep community spirit, Richard was a volunteer for Newtown FISH, providing needed transportation for residents and a long time supporter of the FAITH food pantry in Newtown. He was a proud member of the Newtown Lions Club for over 30 years and served as president for 2 years. He was also involved with Scotty Fund, Danbury Hospital Development Fund and Nunnawauk Meadows.
He was a faithful member of the Newtown United Methodist Church, serving many positions throughout the years. Dick was known for his great sense of humor, magnetic personality, and gift for making people feel welcomed and uplifted. He was truly the life of every gathering. His warmth and kindness will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 16th, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, followed by the Newtown Lions Club ceremony at the Honan Funeral Home in Newtown. Richard and I got to know each other at stop and shop pharmacy. He would always come in and ask me how I was doing. We would talk for awhile. He would tell me of his recent trips, etc. he was a truly wonderful man. I´m so so sad to hear the news of his passing. Your family was truly blessed with a great man.

I met Tom and Margaret when I was 13 years old. I came to visit my sister and she lived in the same apartment building that Tom and Margaret lived in. They were friends. Then we became friends to. Then I left to go back to Denver to school. I did that till I graduated at 15 but we always stayed friends. Then I got married and we still kept in touch with each other . By then we were more like family than friends. When Margaret passed I have missed her so much. Now Tom is gone and I will miss his phone calls. We always talked about old times and how much fun we all had. I will miss him very much. I would like to send my condolences to his family for this devastating loss . God bless.
