Mary Martin Obituary

FAYETTE – Mary Jean (Quinn) Martin, 95, of Fayette, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, the First United Methodist Church in Fayette with Rev. Josh Hansen officiating. Visitation will precede services at the church on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
Mary Jean was born Dec. 23, 1928, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids to Leroy A. Quinn and Mona L. (Bolin) Quinn. While they lived in Cedar Rapids, Jean attended St. Matthews Elementary and Franklin Middle School and was an active Camp Fire girl. She graduated from Marion High School in 1946 and from Iowa State Teacher's College (now known as the University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls in 1948 with a two-year elementary teaching degree. Jean taught one year at Newhall. On May 29, 1949, she married Albert W. Martin, Jr. They farmed north of Marion until they bought a farm and moved to Fayette in 1960. Their sons and wives are Douglas and DeLois Martin, Dennis and Susan Martin, and Duane and Karen Martin, all of Fayette. Their daughters and husbands are Vicki and Randy Kelin of Hidden Timber, S.D. and Debra and Rob Feddersen of Winona, Minn. They have 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren with two on the way; and four great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Robert and his wife, Ann, of Bellport, N.Y, and their families; and many Martin family siblings, nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, and a brother, Larry, preceded her in death.
Jean substitute taught at area schools for many years, was a 4-H leader, PTA officer, Sunday School teacher and was a local United Methodist Woman. She became an officer of the district and conference UMW, a member of the Neighborhood Farm Bureau Women's Club, officer of the County Farm Bureau Women and the County Republican Women. Jean enjoyed making different crafts and after her 60th birthday, she built a large doll house which is housed at the Strawberry Point Wilder Memorial Museum, followed by making several other smaller doll houses. As her hands became arthritic, she could still sew mission school bags, enjoyed reading, corresponding using the internet, and using her computer for making cards, program books and farm sale flyers.
In 2019, Jean and A.W. moved from the farm to Maple Assisted Living in Fayette.
