Lucia Powell Obituary
Lucia Powell
Cheshire, CT - Lucia Passano Powell died at the age of 94 on June 17, 2025, at Elim Park in Cheshire, CT. Mrs. Powell died peacefully after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease.
Lucia was born in Middletown, Ohio on January 16, 1931, with her beloved twin brother, George, to Russell Passano and Louise Burgess Passano. She attended high school in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and attended Randolph-Macon College and graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1953. While in college, she met the love of her life, David Stephen Powell, whom she married in 1954 at St. Thomas Church, New York City.
With Dave, Lucia built a family. They lived in Connecticut for their entire marriage, raising two sons, Timothy Burgess Powell, and John David Powell there. They also spent a lifetime of summers in the Northfield, Massachusetts community known as the Rustic Ridge with their sons, their grandchildren, and their many friends. Dave and Lucia traveled the world, following the interests of their children and sometimes with Dave's beloved college musical groups, the Whiffenpoofs and the Yale Glee Club, with whom he frequently sang.
Whether traveling, hosting social events or raising her family, Lucia was the quiet rock for everyone around her. She had a self-effacing grace and sense of humor that made life seem easier and happier. She was a true "homemaker," which she proudly considered to be her life's occupation. And she was darn good at it. Lucia's curiosity about chemistry made her a gifted cook and gave her a green thumb. Wherever she lived, there was well-nourished indoor greenery and bouquets, and an outdoor garden hospitable to hummingbirds. So great a grandmother was Lucia that her grandchildren named her twice, as "Gemmie" and as "Zsa Zsa".
Lucia leaves a legacy of strength, kindness and humor. Many will miss her beauty and her charm. She was preceded in death by her son Timothy (2018) and her husband David (2022). She is survived by her son John and his wife Heather MacMaster, her daughter-in-law Eve Troutt Powell, her five grandchildren Ian, Jibreel, Mackenzie, Henry and Gideon, and many nephews and nieces and their children.
