Nora Cavanaugh Obituary

Nora (Garrahy) Cavanaugh
Nora (Garrahy) Cavanaugh, 89, of New Hartford, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on July 3, 2025. She was born in Hartford to the late Patrick Joseph and Catherine (O'Connor) Garrahy on November 25, 1935. Nora was a proud graduate of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, West Hartford, Class of 1953. She worked at Met Life before her marriage to Bernard Cavanaugh in 1957, and later she served as a paraprofessional in the learning center of St. Justin's School in Hartford. Over forty years ago, the family moved to New Hartford, and Nora has loved her time at West Hill Lake and her vacations at Old Orchard Beach in Maine. Throughout her life, Nora prioritized her faith, her family, her friends, and her home. She took loving care of her husband Bernie before his passing 39 years ago, and in the decades since she has continued to live independently and to provide care and support for their sons and grandchildren.
Nora leaves her sons and their families: Reverend Kevin P. Cavanaugh of New Hartford; Brian Cavanaugh and his wife Catherine of New Hartford and their children, Elizabeth, Patrick, Colleen and Bridget; and Tom Cavanaugh and his wife Ana of Canton and their children, Michael, Andrew and Juliana. Nora will also be missed by several nieces and nephews and by her many dear friends, especially Georgia and Danny Cahill. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Patricia Garrahy and Edward and Elaine Garrahy and by her niece, Annemarie Garrahy.
Family and friends may call on the Cavanaugh family on Friday, July 11, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 5 Steele Road, New Hartford. Father Kevin Cavanaugh will be the principal celebrant of a Mass of Christian Burial for his mom on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church, 3 Church Street N, New Hartford, CT. All attendees are asked to go directly to the church. Burial to follow in Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery. My deepest sympathy to you, Father Cavanaugh, in the loss of your mother. No matter how old, our hearts break when we lose our Mom's. My condolences, too, to her family and friends. Father Cavanaugh, I remember when you called me one time after you'd moved to New Hartford. I was so surprised to hear from you but I quickly knew that you had the wrong Cathy. I could hear your Mom in the background saying 'is her husband's name, Brian?' I said, 'yes, it is'. ...and then it dawned on me...this was not the first time I was mixed up with the other 'Kathy and Brian'...Kathy Christie, that is...who is married to her Brian. I chuckled once we cleared it up and your mother sounded so cute in the background. God rest her beautiful soul, she must have been so proud of you becoming a priest. May perpetual light shine upon her.
