On Monday, Sept. 1, Elouise Snider went to meet her Lord and Savior. She was born in Mayo to Joseph Shiver and Ethel Hewitt Shiver on Oct. 19, 1930, and was a sister to three siblings, Louise, Johnny Wade (JW) and Bill. Elouise was fond of saying she had a "very interesting life" and had many stories recounting events that occurred to her and stories about an extensive, extended family.
She often talked about growing up in Mayo, especially about Mayo being "wide open" on Saturday nights with the "Free Show" movies and everyone coming to town to shop until late in the night. One of her favorite stories involved jumping off the "Loping Gopher" (LOP&G) train after she and Bill (she threw him off) had snuck on board and it started leaving the depot headed to Perry.
She was well-traveled, having seen all 50 states and living in Texas, Washington, California and Alaska, in addition to her long life in Florida. She spent the final 50 years back in Mayo, enjoying her passion for fishing, seafood and family.
Elouise worked from an early age, starting with setting the press for the Mayo Free Press in her early teens. Following high school, she moved to Jacksonville, taking a job as a clerk for a trucking company. While in Jacksonville, she met and married her first husband, Charles Swam, who gave her two children, Christy and Stanley. After a few years of being a single mother and supporting her young family with the help of her mother, she married Ralph Snider. Together, they traveled, fished and enjoyed life for many years before his passing in 1996.
Elouise was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Louise; brother, JW; and her husband, Ralph. She is remembered by her brother, Bill Shiver; daughter, Christy (Donnie) Hamlin; son, Stanley (Vickie) Swam; grandchildren, Andrea (Harvey) Folsom, Alex Richmann, Adam (Mel) McKinney, Christopher (Becca) Swam, Troy (Hollie) Hamlin, Glen (Annie) Hamlin and Chad (Dana) Hamlin; and a host of great and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Elouise will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, at Grace Baptist Church in Mayo with Rev. Dwight Poole officiating. A private interment will take place in Airline Baptist Cemetery. As a person of strong faith and love, she would be pleased that any memorials would be given to your church or to other charities that touch your heart.
