Rita Bishop Obituary

Dr. Rita Bishop

Dr. Rita Bishop, a devoted educator and compassionate leader, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, leaving behind a vibrant legacy of service, learning, and love.

Born in Ashland, Oregon, on March 14, 1944, Rita was the daughter of Mary and Ralph Holland. She is survived by her loving husband, Lewis Bishop; son, Gordon Lawson (Lauren); beloved grandchildren, Mac and Willson Lee; stepson Johnathan Bishop (Irene); and step-granddaughter, Lily. Her family, friends, and colleagues will remember her warmth, tenacity, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of children's lives.

Rita's passion for education was evident from her earliest days. She earned her undergraduate degree in English from the University of Nevada, then completed a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Santa Clara University, and ultimately a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California.

Dr. Bishop began her distinguished 50-year career in education as a teacher in Salinas, California, and subsequently became vice principal, principal, and assistant superintendent in Campbell, California, where she inspired countless students. She relocated to Roanoke in 1993, serving as assistant superintendent in Roanoke City followed by three years as superintendent of schools in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Her final 15 years in education were spent as superintendent in Roanoke City before her retirement in 2019. In each community, Dr. Bishop was recognized for her visionary leadership and steadfast belief in the transformative power of education.

Her exceptional work in Roanoke was honored when she was named Virginia Superintendent of the Year in 2014, a testament to her deep impact on schools, teachers, and families throughout the State. The following year Yale University presented her the Distinguished Music Educator national award. Beyond her professional achievements, Rita's kindness, generosity, and vibrant spirit touched everyone who knew her. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and steadfast friend.

A visitation will be held at Basilica of Saint Andrew in Roanoke on August 1st, from 11:00 a.m. to noon, immediately followed by a funeral Mass at noon to celebrate Dr. Bishop's remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Schola Cantorum of the Pacific (https://www.pacificschola.org/).

Dr. Rita Bishop's light will continue to shine in the lives she touched, and she will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

I only knew Rita by name. My husband and I knew Lew through National College where we both worked. I kept up with Lew because his birthday is the same day as mine, August 10th. I would email him every year to wish him a Happy Birthday. Prayers for the family.
