Johnny Mitchell Obituary

"Skinny" Johnny Mitchell

November 12, 1942 – January 1, 2025

Mesquite, NV-The world lost a true original with the passing of "Skinny" Johnny Mitchell on January 1, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on November 12, 1942, in Spokane, Washington, Skinny became a legend in radio, a meticulous music collector, and a thrill-seeker with a penchant for fast cars, cool motorcycles, beautiful women, and extraordinary feats.

Skinny's brief service in the United States Air Force was cut short due to medical reasons, but it led him to pursue his true passion-music. As a radio personality in Salt Lake City, he made his mark at KCPX Radio, where his engaging shows and unique personality captured the hearts of listeners. Known for his signature sign-off, "Do what you think is correct and always remember, "Skinny" loves your neck. Goodnight, Babe," he turned music into a shared community experience.

Beyond the radio booth, Skinny was a music historian and perfectionist, spending countless hours restoring rare songs to their original production quality. His legendary collection included every Top 100 pop hit from 1955 to the mid-2010s, as well as extensive collections of Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Marty Robbins, and The Beach Boys.

Skinny wasn't just about music-he loved fast cars, cool motorcycles, and living life to the fullest. He even made history by setting the world record for the longest time spent riding a Ferris wheel. In a feat that captivated his community, Skinny spent nine days and completed 57,339 revolutions on the old Ferris wheel at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.

Skinny is survived by two daughters and two sons, along with five grandchildren who are sure to carry on his adventurous spirit.

Skinny's legacy will be remembered for his contributions to radio, his meticulous preservation of music history, and his zest for life's wildest rides. His story will live on in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him and in every note of the songs he loved so dearly. He truly was a friend to his fans and deeply impacted many of them throughout their teen years as they listened to him in their bedrooms or while dragging State Street. Many of his fans were also greatly impacted by being able to see and meet him during his many live appearances at events throughout the Wasatch Front.

Rest easy, Skinny. The world was better with you in it, and your voice and music will keep playing on in many people's minds and hearts.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Aaron's Mortuary, 1050 S. State Street, Clearfield, UT 84015 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. A Graveside Service will follow at 11 AM at Clearfield City Cemetery, 1050 S. State Street, Clearfield, UT 84015.

Arrangements under the direction of Star Mortuary, Mesquite, NV. Family and friends can sign the online guestbook and leave condolences for the family at www.starmortuary.com.

Skinny was on the radio the first time I told my wife I love her. When I told her "always remember I love your neck". Right after Johnnys sign off.
Thanks for always being there on our radios.

Man Skinny, around here during the seventies, in Salt Lake you were endeared no different than wolfman Jack, Dick Clark, Casey Kasem. Especially the younger generation. Never forget getting pumped for the battle of the records every weeknight Monday thru Friday. Best of time. My condolences to your family

Loved listening to "Skinny" Johnny Mitchell's program on KCPX when I was in Junior High School. I got to talk to him several times when I won his giveaway prize of a 45 record during his contest "Battle of the Records" - and I was so proud of it, I kept the envelopes he sent them in with his return address at the radio station! Awesome teenage memories of a great guy. May he rest in peace with Rock and Roll playing in the background.

Growing up and listening to Skinny every day then finally getting the chance to meet and work with him. Skinny joined the team at Bonneville Raceway Park as an announcer for a while. Working in the tower with him, enjoying his antics and "style" was always so much fun. His gorgeous Vette that he was so proud of. So sad to hear of his passing. Many memories of easier times and incredible music with radio always on in the background. RIP, thank you for those memories.

I remember "Skinny" when he worked in Logan Utah at KLGN in the 60s. A couple of his favorite songs then were "Runaway" by Del Shannon and "Rescue Me" by Fontella Bass. Rest in peace

I listened to Skinny on the radio for all of my teenage years. He came to my Junior High School and played music for an afternoon dance in the gym.
He played a new record that was a big hit at the time. When the record was done, he pointed at me and said to come to the stage. He then gave me the record! I felt like a million bucks and everyone was envious of me getting to talk to and touch the hand of Skinny!
I´ve tried to remember the name of the song on the record but that was over 50 years ago. What I will always remember is the name and face of the great Utah DJ, Skinny Johnny Mitchell!
Quite a guy!

"Skinny" was the voice of my youth, and you might even say that I idolized him. I remember going to The Osmonds concert in the 70s (at the Salt Palace), and he was on stage, as one of the KCPX Jocks. I thought it was so cool to see him in person.
He was a true legend in Salt Lake City radio, and he will certainly be missed.

Growing up WAS Skinny Johnny Mitchell. our family of 7 would go for family rides in our one family car. My dad, who preferred country music, would sometimes turn the radio to KCPX. I actually remember hearing early Beatles songs on SJM's program! In the early 70s, my older sister took me to Liberty Park where Skinny Johnny was doing a fund raiser by staying on the ferris wheel for 24 hours. What an event to remember. Growing up in the 60s and 70s, SJM was part of your life. He was my favorite dj ever. Rest in blessed peace, dear Johnny. You were so cool.
