Susan Morrison Obituary

Susan Gay Morrison
February 14, 1958 - July 11, 2025
Susan Morrison, 67, passed away on July 11, 2025 in Austin, TX. Susan was a native of San Angelo, TX; the youngest child of Eleanor and Major Herbert Morrison and was born on Valentines Day.
Susan graduated from San Angelo Central High School, University of Texas Austin and Baylor School of Law. While still a student at The University of Texas, Susan worked with lawmakers and the League of Women Voters to amend the state constitution to allow for garnishment of wages of parents delinquent in making child support payments. Read more about how she changed the Constitution of the State of Texas or hear the story in her own voice at this link to an interview by Austin Public Radio KUT broadcast in 2019: Her Dad Didn't Pay Child Support.
Susan began her law career with the Texas Education Agency. Susan had her own law practice for several decades and in 2017, she became general counsel for the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. While working, Susan was a member of numerous professional associations and held many leadership roles, including president of Texas Women Lawyers and the Travis County Women Lawyers' Association.
The wider Austin community also benefitted from Ms. Morrison's dedication as she served as chair or a member of various bodies such as the City of Austin Ethics Review Commission, Mueller Airport Redevelopment Advisory Board and site planning committee for HEB's Central Market on North Lamar. Susan is a former president of the board of Communities in Schools, served as an election judge and as membership co-chair for the Austin Area Board of the League of Women Voters. Susan was very active in the Kiwanis Club and served as membership chair.
Susan married John King in January 2005. Susan is pre-deceased by her parents and her brother Richard. In addition to her loving husband, John, those left to mourn her passing are her sister, Nancy Carefoot (George) of Fort Worth, TX; her step-children Jillian of Austin, TX and Spencer (Mackenzie) of Orlando, FL; numerous first cousins, professional associates, roommates and friends who will remember Susan for her quick wit, love of nature and a smile that lights up a room.

Susan first appeared to me dressed as a member of the California Raisins band at an Austin Young Lawyer Halloween party in the 1980s. It was very clever. We became friends and later, she changed my life by pulling me in to work for the Texas School for the Blind. She was a true professional, and yet a personal friend. As she was going through her tumultuous illness (at times becoming better, then regressing), she never complained and only found the good things in life. I will always admire her strength and determination.

Susan was a bright light in the world. I knew her in the 80's as a young attorney just getting started and she had such zeal and vision. She was intelligent, funny and a pleasure to be around. I only wish we had remained in closer touch. You will be missed, Susan. Thank you for your friendship. <3
