Sharon Broughan Obituary

Sharon K. Broughan

Erving, MA - Sharon Kathleen Broughan, 76, was called to her Heavenly Father on February 16, 2023, surrounded by her family and devoted friends, Father Stan and Joan Richotte, after a period of failing health. Born on December 12, 1946, the eldest daughter of Rita (Coogan) and Walter J. Broughan. Sharon graduated from Mahar Regional High School, GCC and Westfield State.

Her professional career included ten years as an administrative secretary at the Farren Memorial Hospital, followed by more than twenty-eight years as Senior Clerk at the Greenfield Police Department. Sharon taught CCD for many years and Red Cross First Aid, was an acting Notary Public and past President of the Professional Secretaries International Organization.

At a young age, Sharon was blessed with the gift of music, learning to play the piano and discovered her beautiful singing voice. She performed in the school choir and local bands, after which her late Aunt Alice taught her to play the organ.

A devout Catholic, Sharon utilized her talent to show her love for the Lord as a soloist/organist at St. John's Church in Millers Falls, St. Patrick's Church in Northfield and even healing Masses in Springfield. Sharon played countless weddings and funerals throughout the area- her first wedding was her brother, Peter's, over fifty years ago and continued with several family members including her nephews Mark and Nathan.

Sharon's greatest joy was hosting family reunions and gatherings. She was Godmother to many and Mom to her beloved poodle Coco and bichon, Kaleigh and two adopted kittens, Zebbie and Gray Boy. She greatly enjoyed her vacations to the Maine Coast, finding new eateries and no matter how cold, putting her feet into the Ocean, even in Galway Bay. She loved trips to Atlantic City, Foxwoods and Hinsdale Racetrack.

Proud of her Irish heritage, she made several trips to Ireland to visit family. Her hobbies included creating stained glass and building a large collection of unique Santa Clauses.

As a cancer survivor herself, she yearly participated in the Relay for Life as captain of the former team (M*A*S*H*) for St. Mary's, St. Anne's and Sacred Heart Parishes as well as participating in countless charitable endeavors.

Sharon was welcomed into heaven by her grandmother, "Ma"; her parents, Rita and Walter; brothers, Mark and James; her beloved niece, Kelly and a sister-in-law, Gail.

Survivors include her brother, Peter and his wife Cheryl of Gill; a sister, Marita Hutchinson of Turners Falls; nephews, Nathan and his wife Karen of Wells, ME and Mark and his wife Emily of Greenfield; close friends, Joan Richotte and Barbara Sullivan; as well as her large extended family and friends.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Thursday February 23 at 11am at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls with the Rev. Stanly Aksamit officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Greenfield.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls, MA 01376 or to the Dakin Humane Society, P.O. Box 6307, Springfield, MA 01101.

I remember Sharon and all the Broughans as a fun, kind and loving family. Her brother, Jim, was a classmate. The world has less kindness in it with her passing.

Sharon lighted up the world around her. She was the kindest and humble woman I ever had the pleasure to meet and become friends with. She had a voice of an Angel and a heart filled with love. I feel so honored to call her my friend. I love her very much. My sincerest condolences to all of the family and her friends. I will pray for you all to remember the joy and laughter Sharon brought to each of our lives. May we honor Sharon´s memory by remembering the love she shared with all. I will miss my dear friend

What a gift Sharon had for enhancing every Mass and service we have attended at Our Lady of Peace with her beautiful voice. During a winter blizzard in December 2017, Sharon came to the funeral service of our late sister-in-law. The Mariani family will never forget that, as her singing healed our hearts.

I heard Sharon play and sing once. That was all I needed to confirm all of the wonderful things that my dear friend, her sister-in-law Cheryl, told me about her. Pete - you are especially in my thoughts. My heart hurts for all of the family, but I know your deep faith will steady you and help you move on to wonderful memories of Sharon.

Sharon was a close friend in high school and later our group reconnected and got together often to eat out or go on adventures.
She was a loving friend and often hosted us at her home. We also spent a week in Wells with her some years ago.
She will never be forgotten and I look forward to seeing her again when my time comes to go home.
