I knew Carole when I was about 6 or 7, and would spend time with her son Jim on their farms during the summer in Woodbine and Holstein Iowa. Carole said I would ask for a dime to take the streetcar back to my home in Omaha. I can remember on the farm she would hold a chicken by the neck, and just quickly yank it dead in a second with no fuss. None of that chopping the head off with blood going everywhere. When Carole and her husband, Ivan, and son Jim moved to Omaha, in the late 50's, she would take me and Jim downtown to the movies to expose us to culture watching South Pacific, The King and I, and Ben Hur. I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but she was a great cook. She had a positive influence in my life, and will be missed.
