Martha Mielke, 77, passed away on February 2, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with lung problems. She was born on May 18, 1947, to Bob and Lucile Lindsey in Traverse City, Michigan. She attended Mapleton School, one of the seven country schools on the peninsula.
Martha spent her childhood running through cherry orchards with friends, picking cherries to earn spending money. She and her twin sister, Helen, would often ride their bikes to the Mapleton gas and grocery store, carefully selecting penny candy from the glass counter. As they grew older, they began babysitting to earn extra money, which they found much more enjoyable.
She graduated from Traverse City High School in 1965 before attending classes at Northwestern Michigan College. It was there that she met her future husband, Don Mielke. The two married and settled in Don's hometown of Ludington, Michigan, where they raised their two children, Chris (Kate) and Marnie (Chris). Martha cherished her role as a grandmother to Tyler and Alexia, who loved visiting and playing on the same beach their father had spent much of his youth.
Martha deeply loved the beach and spent countless hours there with her children and friends. She and a close-knit group of women affectionately referred to themselves as the "Wives of the Swedish Mafia" and could always be found at the north end of Ludington's town beach. If the sun was shining, Martha was at the beach enjoying the waves and the sun.
A devoted member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Martha taught confirmation classes for many years and, alongside her husband, helped organize the church's annual meatball dinner to raise funds for missions. She and Don also sang in the church choir.
As her children grew up and moved on to their own lives, Martha took up scrapbooking and quilting, where her artistic talents flourished. She enjoyed sharing these hobbies with family and friends, and everyone benefitted from her expertise.
After Don retired, the couple spent three months each year in Port Isabel, Texas, soaking up the sun. They also purchased a travel trailer and traveled to various state parks throughout Michigan, with Ludington State Park holding a special place in their hearts.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Lucile Lindsey; her brother, Mike; and her brother-in-law, David. She is survived by her loving husband, Don; her children, Chris (Kate) and Marine (Chris); her grandchildren, Tyler and Alexia; her sister, Marian, her twin sister, Helen (Wayne); her brother, Warren (Shirley) and many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held in Martha's honor on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church, 16426 Center Road, Traverse City, Michigan. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a service at 11:00 a.m. followed by a luncheon at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Old Mission United Methodist Church or the
charity of your choice.
Martha will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
