Dorothy Richardson Obituary

Dorothy Richardson, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2025, at the age of 96. Born Dorothy Merlene Childers on November 27, 1928, in Childress, Texas, she was the daughter of Walter Newton Childers and Canard Anglin. She spent her early years in Texas before relocating to New Jersey in 1945, where she would begin the next chapter of a rich and vibrant life.
In New Jersey, Dorothy met her first husband, Arthur J. Rees, Jr. Together they built a loving home and raised seven children. Their family life was filled with summers spent camping and trips "down the shore," creating lasting memories. Tragically, Arthur and their son died in a plane accident, a heartbreak that Dorothy carried with extraordinary grace.
In 1981, Dorothy remarried Thomas Richardson. They shared a joyful life together, hosting family gatherings, traveling, and spending cherished time at their beloved retreat in Eastham, Massachusetts, where they eventually retired. Thomas passed away in 2012.
Known in her younger years as Merlene, Dorothy was deeply admired for her strength, resilience, and warmth. She had a gift for decorating, a passion for antiques, and was a fabulous cook. Her greatest joy, however, came from her role as a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Dorothy was predeceased by both of her husbands; three of her children, James Rees, Debbie Sparone, and Dianna Bode; her daughter-in-law, Joyce Rees; and her sons-in-law, Grant Wehrfritz and Joseph Sparone.
She is survived by her loving children: Dolores Wehrfritz, Donna (Robert) Shuman, Arthur (Judith) Rees III, and Darlene Snider; as well as her cherished stepchildren: Brian and Carolyn Richardson, Dana Richardson, and Lisa and Stephen Szanto. Dorothy also leaves behind many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward her legacy of love, resilience, and family.
Dorothy's life was one of deep devotion, quiet strength, and enduring love. She will be missed dearly by all who had the privilege of knowing her, especially those who spent time with her at the Cape.

My Collection
What treasurers I've collected, from the most unlikely places
Fine crystal bells, decanters and the daintiest of vases!
Old bottles, jars, and figurines, stained glass and paperweights.
I memorize their histories, their origins, their dates!
I clean them all and shine them up, until they're good as new.
And set them in the window, so the sun can sparkle through!
Such clutter and confusion, from such small and simple things -
But oh! The recollections that my dear collection brings!
RIP Mom/Grandma

Mrs. Rees was "the kind of beauty" that was profoundly deeper than her gorgeous cheekbones, yummy Friday night Italian dinners and amusing tolerance. She was the Heart of the family and a Joy to have known and loved.
Blessings to her beloved family and friends...

I know and remember your Mom, and family well from Essex Fells NJ. I was close friends with Dianna. I kept in touch with your Mom over the years and saw her in the Cape in her home. Another friend, Sarah (Sally) McMillan and I had her over for dinner to talk and visit with your Mom. She always amazed me with her positive outlook and energy and it felt like she could live forever. Rest in Peace and know that you all are in my heart and prayers.
