Jay Brummett Obituary

Jay Clift Brummett
April 2, 1943 - August 6, 2025
On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Jay Brummett, loving father, grandfather and friend, peacefully departed this life to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven. He was 82 years old, having been born on April 2, 1943 in Duncan, Oklahoma, as the second child of parents Marvin and Fanella Brummett.
Jay graduated with a degree in history from The University of Oklahoma and also attended The University of Texas School of Law before finding his true calling in Texas politics and real estate. He became a licensed real estate broker in 1969 and eventually served as chairman of the Texas Real Estate Commission under Governor George W. Bush in the late 1990s.
While working at the State Capitol in the 1970s, Jay met and married Sharon Renee Earnest, with whom he had three children, Andrew, Ben and Elizabeth; and ten grandchildren, Erin, Anna, Hannah, Sarah, William, Katie, Blake, Brantner, Liam, and Millie. He was a proud Dad and Granddad / G-Dad, and could often be found seated on sidelines or in auditoriums, rooting for his kids and grandkids, and eagerly celebrating their every achievement. He was also a family historian, looking back proudly on ancestors who sailed on the Mayflower or courageously fought in the Civil War. But his proudest moments were always in the present as he endlessly doted on his beloved children and grandchildren.
Jay was courageous in his fight against both cancer and dementia, and he eventually died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin Kight and Fanella Clift Brummett, and his sister, Marla. He is survived by the children he had with his former wife Sheri, Elizabeth Brummett [Matthew] Behncke, Benjamin Michael [Staci] Brummett, and William Andrew [Jessica] Brummett; daughter CeCe [Reed] Harned and son James [Susan] Leichter; fourteen beloved grandchildren; nephews, Marc [Marea] Meadows, Jay [Toni] Meadows, and Jon [Sheri] Sinclair; grandnephews, Austin [Missy] Meadows and Coleman Meadows, and grandniece, Megan [Ben] Pleasant; and many other cherished family members and friends.
Jay was a follower of Jesus Christ and had two church families in Austin, TX: Wayside Communities Church and St. Francis Anglican Church, both of which he attended with his sons and their families. You were my friend in our time. We shared more fun life experiences than we probably should have! But heck we just lived it.
Rest now Jay boy.
