Stephen Cokins Obituary

Stephen James Cokins, known lovingly as "Steve," passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, in Austin, Texas, October 15, 2025, at the age of 77. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Catherine Cokins. Born on March 16, 1948, and raised in Galveston and Houston, Texas, Steve lived a full and vibrant life marked by unwavering love for his family, deep faith, and a joyful, magnetic presence that touched everyone he met.
Known by many affectionate names-Cowboy Steve, Snickers, Papou, Crazy Greek, and Wild Man-Steve had a gift for lighting up every room with his beaming smile, candid wit, and good-natured banter. He was a force of life, fiercely devoted to those he loved.
Steve cherished 56 wonderful years with his beloved wife, Anita, building a loving family that was his greatest joy. He was a proud father to Tommy and his wife Jenny, Chris and his wife Amber, and Cassie and her husband Creed Ford IV, all of Lakeway, TX. He was a devoted Papou to seven grandchildren-Cole, Caroline, Creed V, Pierce, Anna, Stephen Max, and Calla-who lit up his life. Whether teaching them to drive or fix anything, Steve was a hands-on, ever-present grandfather.
Steve's legacy lives on in the values he passed down: strength, confidence, hard work, and steadfast determination. His work ethic began at an early age. Delivering groceries before the age of 10, managing a grocery store and owning several businesses in the Houston area allowed him to move to Lake Travis in 1983 where he fulfilled his dream of owning a marina. Many in the community will remember him from Hurst Harbor Marina, where he grew the business from just 100 slips to over 1,000. He loved being able to meet so many people and share his passion for this place.
His favorite joy was being outside in the sun. Whether surfing at the beach, water skiing on the lake or driving across the country on his Harley Davidson motorcycle, Steve was never one to sit idle. He loved old cars and tinkering with anything in the garage. He was a beloved member of many car and motorcycle groups over the years. These special friends held a piece of his heart and their kindness over the past several years, but especially the past few weeks meant the world to him.
A fighter to the very end, Steve was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2018 and was given just six months to live. True to his spirit, he defied the odds and fought valiantly for more than seven years. He was deeply grateful for the care and support he received from his medical team, including Dr. Nugent, Texas Oncology, ARA IR, and the exceptional staff at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Steve was instrumental in helping establish the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Austin, a spiritual home that meant the world to him. Above all else, it was Steve's loyal faith in God-guided by his priest, Father Vasileios-that sustained him.
Funeral services will be held at Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 414 St Stephen's School Rd S, Austin, TX 78746, on Monday, October 20, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a light luncheon.
A private family-only burial will follow at Fall Creek Cemetery in Spicewood, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, https://onrealm.org/TGOC/-/form/give/now.

Steve Cokins our friend.

In life you meet people, but long lasting friendships are precious & few. Meeting Steve and Anita was a long lasting friendship. Steve always had a big smile, always welcoming, could keep you laughing constantly, and was always a loving husband and father.

For the last seven years we watched Steve go through so much with his cancer like a warriior, and his wife and children were there every step of the way. Times when we would have given up, Steve never did.

We are missing him already & always will. His wonderful family will continue to carry his memories and dreams into the future generations.

Steve is now in heaven pain free with our Savior Jesus Christ.

Love you Steve.
