Portsmouth, NH – Theodore Millay Blood, Jr., 86, of Portsmouth, passed away July 31, 2013. Born in Dover, New Hampshire, on December 19, 1926, he was the son of Theodore M. Blood, Sr. and Hattie (Swaine) Blood. He lived in Newington and Portsmouth his whole life.
He left high school in 1943 and became an Apprenticed Machinist at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) in Shop 31. He entered the United States Navy Reserves where he was a ships cook and Honorably Discharged in 1946. Ted returned to Portsmouth High School for three years and graduated in 1949.
Ted was a volunteer Fire Fighter in Newington from 1946 to 1951 and became a permanent Fire Fighter in Portsmouth in 1952, retiring as Captain in 1977. After his retirement from the Fire Department he went to work for the PNSY as a Marine Machinist in Shop 38 in 1977. He was the PNSY Fire Department Fire Inspector, retiring in 1993. He also worked as a school bus driver.
He enjoyed camping with his family, sail boating, brook fishing, and going on bicycle rides with his children & neighborhood kids through New Castle.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Virginia (Merrill) Blood of Portsmouth; son, Theodore M. Blood III & wife Wendy Blood, daughter Sandra Priano all of Portsmouth; grandchildren, Heather Blood Martin & husband Sean Martin of RI, Sara Blood, Kyle Priano and Abigail Priano all of NH; great-grandchildren Acadia Bloodlane and Brady Martin; sisters, Barbara Hodgin and Zelda Phipps of FL; many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 PM on Friday, August 2, 2013 at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 Chapel Street, Portsmouth, NH. Family flowers only. Memorial contributions may be made to The Common Table, c/o St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 Chapel Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Please make checks payable to St. John's Episcopal Church, indicate in memo "Common Table".
