Over his long career at the Baltimore Sun, Dow Jones' National Observer, Detroit News, Washington Times and Sandy Corporation Gus held varied positions. He started on the copy desk before being promoted to the composing room. As his career advanced, he was a sports and general news reporter, picture and state editor and headed the media division at a company that provided information in all media. His favorite position was that of investigative reporter.
Gus strove to pass on his love and high standards for the written word to the next generation of journalists. He was also a member of Marquette's Center for Ethics Studies. During a sabbatical, part of which he spent consulting at the Washington Times, he was offered a full-time position. That opportunity allowed him and Connie to return to Maryland to be near his children. After retiring he taught for a time at the College of Notre Dame.
In addition to the happiness of being with family and friends, Gus and Connie shared the love and companionship of three cats and five beautiful collies over the years. They enjoyed training and competing with their dogs in Obedience, Flyball, Agility and Nose Work with varied success. They were never able to train the cats.
Gus enjoyed classical music having attended the Peabody Institute as a child. In 2016 he and Connie moved to Fairhaven, a retirement community in Sykesville, MD. Gus continued to write and develop his artistic talent through the art programs that were offered.
