Lewis "Gene" Neff, 83, of Kennard, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, at Hancock Regional Health in Greenfield following an extended illness.
He was born on October 27, 1941, in Connersville, Indiana, a son of the late George Ace and Gertrude Veronica (Griner) Neff.
Gene married the love of his life, Judy Carlene Grigson, on January 4, 1964. He was employed by the Charles A. Beard Memorial School Corporation in maintenance for 22 years before retiring in 2009. He was a member of the Kennard Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years and also served as the president of the Kennard Town Board. Gene and Judy were long-time members of the Full Gospel Temple in Muncie, where he served as an usher.
Gene enjoyed woodworking, fishing, gardening, and mowing the lawn. He would often mow lawns in town for those in need. Gene loved to go mushroom hunting and searching for buried treasure with his metal detector. He enjoyed watching westerns, NASCAR, birdwatching, and feeding the birds. Most of all, Gene loved when his family would all get together.
Those left to cherish Gene's memory include a daughter, Denise (Richard) Neff Mahon of Greenfield; six grandchildren, David Horan, Daniel Horan, Kevin Horan, Evan (Anna) Lyall, Aaron Lyall, and Jaclyn Mahon; two great-grandchildren, Aeris and Finnick Lyall; his mother-in-law, Etta Mae Schlenz, of Knightstown and a sister-in-law, Michelle (Larry) Eltzroth of New Palestine.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Judy Neff; a daughter, Dana Lee (Kevin) Horan, and seven brothers and sisters.
