After 93 glorious years on Earth, our beloved dancing queen, Verna Lee Coers, made her way into everlasting life on July 8, 2025.
Verna is survived by three of her children: Mark (Debbie) Coers (Pensacola, FL), John (Gena) Coers (Muncie, IN), and Cindy (John) Garzon (Fishers, IN); seven grandchildren: Bryce Coers, Natalie (Scott) Mathes, Emily Karas, Bryan (Maggie) Coers, Dalton (Haley) Coers, Jordan (Tyler) Einhaus, and Jay Garzon; and 11 great grandchildren: Norah, Mitchell, Brooks, Olivia, Landon, Ben, Owen, Lucian, Colt, Wade, and Owen.
Verna is preceded in death by her husband, Russell E. Coers; siblings Peggy Freeman, Jo Ditton, and Dorothy Dalton; her beloved son Douglas Coers; and longtime best friend and partner in crime Nancy Wilson.
Verna was born in New Castle, Indiana, on April 30, 1932. She is the daughter of Carl and Catherine Dalton and sister of Dorothy, Peggy, Jo, Jean, and Marcia. She graduated from New Castle High School in 1950 and promptly married the love of her life, Russell Coers. They traveled during Russell's time in the military before settling back in New Castle and starting their family. After relocating to Muncie, Verna continued her role of CEO of the household. She worked in the cafeteria at Emerson Elementary, Washington Carver Elementary and also ran the concession stand (The Spoon) at Catalina Swim Club.
Verna took pride in providing a loving and nurturing home for her children and grandchildren. Family was everything to her. She was a great cook and known for her baking, specifically her Mississippi mud, pies, cookies, and cakes. She baked from scratch and took great pleasure in teaching her grandchildren how to as well. She enjoyed hosting Sunday family dinners and holidays with the extended family. Verna loved to be with her people, especially when it came with music and a dance floor. Her dance moves are legendary amongst her family.
Verna was an avid card player. She loved to play bridge and euchre and taught her grandchildren how to play poker using pennies as chips. She was always up for a round of spoons, go fish, or Yahtzee with her grandchildren. In her later years, she snow birded in Arizona with her sisters, enjoyed sitting at her kitchen table playing solitaire while watching a classic movie on TV or having a glass of wine on the patio. She loved her dogs and had many special companions over the years, including Bear, Oscar, and Jackson.
A gathering to honor and celebrate Verna's life will be held on July 27, 2025 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall (Muncie). We encourage all who knew and loved her to come celebrate our incredible mom, grandma, and Gigi. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Catalina Swim Club, 1001 N. Clarkdale Drive, Muncie, IN 47304.
