Carol Smith Obituary

Carol Jean Smith, age 65, of Edmore, Michigan, passed away early Saturday morning, July 12, 2025 at her home under the loving care of her husband and Heartland Hospice after a brief but valiant battle with glioblastoma. The daughter of Gerald Joseph "Jerry" & June Arlene (Wyeth) Hetherington, she was born on July 21, 1959 in Alma, Michigan.

Her family moved from a dairy farm in Shepherd to Vestaburg where she started the fourth grade and met the love of her life, Lyman Smith. Although life intervened, they eventually reconnected and married on July 27, 1990 in Stanton, Michigan and together raised two daughters and enjoyed almost 35 years of marriage.

Following her graduation from Vestaburg High School in 1978, she worked for nearly 20 years at the former Tri-County Hospital in Edmore, then for many years at the Village Market in Sheridan, and retired from Clover in Ithaca. While she enjoyed camping and traveling, Carol found her greatest joy in her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald & June Hetherington ; and a sister, Mary Hetherington.

Surviving are her husband, Lyman L. Smith of Edmore; their daughters, Chasta & Ben Langworthy of Alma, and Billi Jo & Jeremy Hartman of Riverdale; her four precious grandchildren, Izabella Langworthy, Charlee Langworthy, Waylen Hartman, and Atlee Hartman; three brothers and a sister, Darell & Connie Hetherington, Joe Hetherington, Todd & Lynn Hetherington, and Nancy Hetherington; four siblings-in-law, Colene & Allen Ryckman, Sr., Billy & Dawn Smith, Montie & Dian Smith, and Gladys & Steve Oliver; and many, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

A private family visitation will be held at Christiansen's Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, with private graveside services taking place at Ferris Center Cemetery near Vestaburg.

Instead of flowers, contributions in Carol's memory to the Glioblastoma Foundation (https://glioblastomafoundation.org/get-involved/donate) would be appreciated.
