WILLIAM HELLIER Obituary

NEW MILLPORT - Dr. William Walter "Uncle Bill" Hellier, Jr. of New Millport, and Dundalk, Md., journeyed into the care of his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023.

He was born in Bellefonte to parents William and Aleene (Passmore) Hellier.

He graduated as valedictorian from Dundalk High School Class of '62 and continued his education at Johns Hopkins University ('66, '68), earning his PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Maryland ('74).

Uncle Bill worked as a professional engineer for Pennsylvania State Parks and Bureau of Mining. He traveled extensively with his mother to many places in Europe, Russia and China and picked up multiple languages along the way. Uncle Bill was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Clearfield. He was also active in the Masonic Lodge, York Rite, Scottish Rite, and Shrine, traveling near and far for his District Deputy duties and then as Most Puissant Grand Master.

Uncle Bill loved to entertain with stories of hunting, his athletic days, and Cherry Corners; each ending with "This is most certainly true." Uncle Bill shared his love for music through his guitar, and invested hours playing cribbage, Battleship, chess, and Go Fish. He also showed his devotion to the children in his life by appearing at school events, sometimes wearing his masonic regalia.

Surviving are a sister and her husband, Wendy Hellier (Robert) Stevens; four nieces and a nephew. He also leaves behind friends Donald and Miriam Mains, their children, and grandchildren as his adopted family. Uncle Bill was predeceased by his parents and sister, Susan Hellier Dunn.

The family thanks Transitions at Allen Cove and Grane Hospice for their care at the end of his life.

Memorial gifts may be sent to his church, St. John's Lutheran, at 210 E. Pine St., Clearfield PA 16830; or Moshannon Lodge F&AM 391, P.O. Box 206, Phillipsburg PA 16866.

A celebration of life will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Ronald C.L. Smith Funeral Home, Duncannon.

I was Bills home health aid when he was home, I enjoyed listening to all his stories he´d tell me from when was younger and about his family. He could never say enough nice words about his family. He always had a new story to tell me each day I was there. After my first few visits with Bill, he sang to me a few times. He told me one of my last visits he´d have to get his guitar out and play and sing to me. Bill was a good man, with a big heart. I couldn´t have asked for a better first client as I was starting into home health.

Brother Bill and I did some traveling to the various Masonic Organizations that we both had been officers in, and the many friends we had throughout the years. We had many laughs and a few words about things, but never went away mad, always friends. I learned a lot in his living room from Brother Bill. Sure will miss him.

So sorry to hear of Bill´s passing. I remember him coming to the (John) Passmore reunions in the 80´s. He was always a great favorite of the kids! Fond memories.

Such a wonderful, down to earth man despite being a genius. He was a great friend of my father´s. He was a great man all around. Our deepest condolences.
