Betty Oliver Obituary
Betty Anne DeJarnette Oliver, 89, of Mt. Gilead peacefully entered heaven on Sunday, February 23rd, at FirstHealth Hospice House, where she was surrounded by family.
Betty was born October 13, 1935, in Alexander County to the late William Edward and Sudye Ferrell DeJarnette.
Betty was a 1953 graduate of Stony Point High School.
She retired from West Montgomery High School after 22 years as the school secretary, bookkeeper; and for a period of time, was the cheerleading coach.
Betty was an active member of the local Montgomery County Association of Educational Office Professionals and the North Carolina Association of Educational Office Professionals. She held various roles, including President at the local, district, and state levels during her working years.
In retirement, she joined the Retired Association of Educational Office Professionals where she was the Treasurer. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Gilead where she served the Lord as a Sunday School teacher, an active member of the United Methodist Women, and substitute pianist.
Betty and her late husband, Don, were also members of First Presbyterian Church in Norwood during their years living in Norwood, where she led the Young at Heart social group and was a substitute pianist.
Betty was an active member of the Chi Sigma Club in Mt. Gilead. Don and Betty loved their travels to Blowing Rock and Kure Beach, which brought new and cherished friendships to their lives.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Don Allen Oliver on February 19, 2025, her parents and brother W.E. DeJarnette Jr, and daughter-in-law Wendy Haithcock Oliver.
Betty is survived by her son, Allen Oliver (Mindy) of Kure Beach, and daughter, Anne Oliver Evans (Bruce) of Mt. Gilead; grandchildren Austin Oliver (Ashley) of Cary, Daniel Oliver of Cary, Maribeth Evans Leonard (Robert) of Raleigh, and Rebecca Evans Pittman (Michael) of Sylva; great-grandchildren Jane Oliver, Mary Oliver, Charlie Oliver, Sam Oliver, and Oliver Leonard. Betty is also survived by her nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.
She loved her family with all that she had and was committed to building a tight knit family unit, often worrying about each of us as we navigated life. She was deeply rooted in her values and always willing to lend a helping hand or offer a bit of advice. Betty was quick-witted and strong-willed.

A celebration of life for the lives of Betty DeJarnette Oliver and Don Allen Oliver will be held on Saturday March 1, 2025 at 1 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Gilead. The family will receive visitors immediately following the service.
