Roger Scott Obituary

Roger Loy Scott was born in Mendota, CA to Albert and Jewel Scott on September 24, 1935. Sadly, he passed away on June 23rd, 2025, in Roseville, CA at the age of 89 years and 10 months. Roger was one of four children: brothers Gene (Sonny) Scott, Danny Scott, and sister Louise Tonti. He was a loving husband for 69 years and 10 months to his wife Gloria Scott, and a devoted father to his 5 children: Roger Scott, Kelly Scott, Judy Vergara, Phillip Scott, and Tracy Weddle. He had 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Roger's brother, Gene Scott, and son, Kelly Scott preceded him in death.
Roger graduated from Porterville High School in 1954. He had fond memories of his high school years hanging out with friends, playing the ukulele, participating in school plays, and marching in the band. (The last musical production he participated in was Fiddler on the Roof in 2014.) Because of his love of music, he participated in the high school marching band while attending PHS. He was the base drummer for Buck Schaffer's popular marching band his junior and senior years, which is where he met his wife, Gloria. Gloria played the clarinet in the band. Roger noticed Gloria and wanted to get her attention, so he purposely bumped into her with his base drum when she dropped her music during practice. They eventually began dating and got married on September 3, 1955. Roger was active as an alumnus of his high school class. He leaves behind friends whom he had continued to be in contact with until his passing.
After Roger and Gloria married, they moved to Sacramento for 1 year. In 1958, they moved to the Lindsay/Strathmore area, where they lived for many years and were active in the community. Roger graduated from Fresno State in 1961. While attending college, he was a provisional teacher for Strathmore School District. Roger (Mr. Scott) taught 6th grade and became the district's first Orange Tree Agriculture teacher using the 10 acres across from the school as his classroom. He also drove a school bus before and after school during the four years with the district. After completing his education degree, he began teaching for Lindsay Unified School District. He taught math and history at Lindsay Junior High and eventually became the woodshop teacher. He also taught 6th grade at Jefferson Elementary and briefly a math resource teacher. During his education career he received Mathematic Grants from Arkansas University and Oklahoma University. He left teaching in 1980 to start his own business driving a hay-bale cruiser to collect and stack bales of hay for the various farmers in the area. He maintained his business for 5 years.
Roger (Mr. Scott) returned to education in 1985 when the opportunity to teach woodshop once again became available. He loved teaching woodshop! His woodshop classroom was meticulous and well organized. He took much pride creating projects that would help his students develop important skills they could use in the future as a hobby or career, at the same time learning how to use various tools and the importance of safety. Mr. Scott taught woodshop as a leader for Lindsay 4-H for a few years, also. It gave him much pride and joy to see the various classroom projects displayed on the front porches of his student's homes. He was loved and respected by not only the staff he worked with, but also his students. Mr. Scott retired from education in 1996.
After retirement, Roger and Gloria enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Canada, across the Midwest, and a trip to Jerusalem. During 10 years of his retirement, he worked full-time for Myers Funeral Home and served as president of the Lindsay Strathmore Cemetary Board. In 2006, Roger and Gloria sold their long-time residence on Foothill Road in Lindsay and moved to Porterville. In 2017 they moved to Roseville, CA to be closer to family.
Roger was devoted as a Christian and member of the Church of Christ. During the years he and Gloria lived in Lindsay, they attended the Church of Christ on Hockett Street in Porterville. Eight years ago, when they moved to Roseville, Roger and Gloria began attending the Church of Christ in Fair Oaks, CA. He loved his family in Christ very much and was faithful and active until his passing.
Roger will be laid to rest next to his son, Kelly Scott, at the Lindsay Strathmore Cemetery on Friday, July 11th, at 10am. Roger Boone of the Church of Christ in Placerville, CA will officiate the service.
