John Cameli Obituary

April 20, 1952 ~ June 6, 2025
John William Cameli of Gibbstown, NJ, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025 at the age of 72. John was born on April 20,1953 to John and Barbara Cameli (both now deceased). He grew up one of four siblings, graduating from St. James High School, Penns Grove, NJ and Glassboro State College (Rowan University). A well-loved art teacher at Wenonah Elementary School for more than 25 years by day, he believed his career of being an educator was the highest of honors in service to his students and their families. Noted for filling his days from start to finish, he was also a custodian at Gibbstown Schools for more than 25 years by night, enjoying the camaraderie of so many of his co-workers.

He was predeceased by his sister and best friend, Carolyn Hershey, and is survived by his sisters, Muriel Leone (Russell) and Yvonne Laurusonis; by his niece, Amy Zengo (Alex) and their children, Abbott and Ainsley; his niece, Janel Catalano (Joseph) and their children, Natalie and Joe, his nephew, Russell Leone (April) and their children Billy, Jeweleanna, Joey, and the late Russell Jr.; his nephew Todd Laurusonis; and his niece, Shelby Laurusonis. He also leaves behind many cousins and friends that meant the world to him, a list too long to share.

Known to most as "Johnny", he never met a Jersey diner he didn't like. He maintained an incredible album collection stacked with Philly Soul and all the Quiet Storm's greatest hits. He never forgot to renew his annual Ocean City beach tag for his many weekend jaunts down the shore. He loved riding in his classic Cadillac and reminiscing about Wanamaker's, Grace Kelly, and reading anything and everything about JFK. He always welcomed guests with a freshly baked cake and a piping hot cup of coffee served on his finest china.

Funeral service will be 11 AM, Thursday, June 12, 2025 at Cheega Funeral Home, 1329 Kings Highway, Swedesboro, where friends may call from 9:30 AM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of John Cameli to Appel Farm Arts Camp Scholarship Fund, a non-profit inclusive youth arts organization providing financial assistance to summer art campers who would not otherwise have the resources to attend. Donations may be sent to: Appel Farm Arts and Music Center, P.O. Box 888, Elmer, NJ 08318 or made online at https://appelfarm.org/get-involved/support-us/donate/

To the Cameli Family,
I remember Johnny very well. He lived down the street from me on Harmony Road/ Swedesboro Avenue when we were kids. As a kid, I remember him being so handsome.
He was such a great guy!
My heart goes out to all of you!
Love,
Linda DiDonato
