Ruth Gilmore Obituary

Ruth Irene Gilmore, 91, a resident of Sewickley, passed away peacefully at home, Saturday, July 17, 2021. Ruth was born July 4, 1930, in Detroit, Mich., to the late Katie and Floyd L. King. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Floyd King and Ellis Donald King; and sister, Thelma Washington. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 73 years, Harold William Gilmore Sr., of Sewickley; her son, Harold W. Gilmore Jr., of Sewickley; her daughter, Sandra Lee Gilmore, of Sewickley; her sister, Caroline Carter, of Rochester, N.Y.; her brother-in-law, Alonzo (Grace) Gilmore, of Crafton; her granddaughter, Melissa Nicole (Richard) Fann, of Ross Township; her great-grandson, Trey Fann, of Ross Township; a host of nieces and nephews; and her lifelong friend, Mary Dippolito, of Sewickley. Ruth was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, community servant and friend to all she met. Before her retirement, Ruth was a clerk at the Sewickley News on Beaver Street. There, she met many of her fellow residents of Sewickley. Ruth took pride in getting to know all who came to the store, earning the nickname "the mayor of Sewickley." Ruth was extremely dedicated to her churches, St. Matthews African Methodist Episcopal Zion and St. Stephen's Anglican Church, as well as the local community. At St. Matthews, Ruth sang in the church choir, served as a missionary, a deaconess, children's group leader, and Sunday school teacher. At St. Stephen's, Ruth belonged to numerous Bible study and ministry outreach groups, including the seniors group. Additionally, Ruth supported a number of community organizations, such as the Daniel B. Matthews Historical Society, UPMC's Living at Home program, and World Day of Prayer, to name a few. Ruth also shared her love of cooking with the students at Quaker Valley Middle School by co-teaching the "Generations Together" home economics course. Ruth enjoyed traveling with family, visiting friends and neighbors, going to luncheons, and later in life serving as a one-woman playdate for her great-grandson, Trey. Ruth's family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, July 23, 2021, at RICHARD D. COLE FUNERAL HOME, 328 Beaver St. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. at St. Stephen's Church, 405 Frederick Ave. Memorial donations may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice. secure.qgiv.com/for/conlutmin/restriction/GoodSamaritanHospice.
