Dorothy Nicholas Obituary

Dorothy "Dottie" Nicholas, 84, of Dorseyville, Indiana Township, passed Wednesday, July 14, 2021, with her family by her side. Born and raised in Marguerite, she was a coal miner's daughter and youngest of 10 siblings. Dottie was very proud of her Eastern European heritage and took great strength and comfort in her Catholic faith. She had a musical family and excelled in theater productions at St. Xavier Academy in Westmoreland County where she was also crowned the May Queen. After graduation, she worked as a secretary with PPG Industries in Greensburg, PA where she met the love of her life, Jim Nicholas, from whom she was inseparable. They married in 1963 and moved to Pittsburgh. Dottie enjoyed spending time with her family, particularly at the beach on Topsail Island, NC. Her top priority was raising her three sons, Jim (Roberta) Nicholas, Mike (Mary) Nicholas, and Sean (Jennifer) Nicholas, and was the loving grandmother of Molly, Wyatt, Michela, James, Stuart and Sydney Nicholas. As her boys entered school, she returned to the workforce as a teacher's aide and ultimately retired as a guidance secretary in the Fox Chapel High School, where she valued each student and developed lifelong friendships. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003 and beat it, remaining cancer-free for the remainder of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband and siblings. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 2021, at ENGLISH FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES INC., 378 Maryland Ave., Oakmont, PA 15139. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 26, 2021, in St. Victor's Catholic Church, 535 Bairdford Road, Bairdford, PA 15006. Everyone please meet at church. Interment will follow in Lakewood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Dottie's name to National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC), P.O. Box 11561, Pittsburgh, PA 15238 or online at www.ovarian.org. Online condolences may be made to: englishfuneralhome.com.

My deepest condolences to all of Mrs. Nicholas' family and friends.
She was always so good to me with my many visits to the guidance office at FCHS and visits after my graduation.
She was more than a secretary to me. She was a part of a supportive community that helped save my life. I loved her and I'm sorry to hear I missed her passing, but so grateful for her and glad she had a good life! Not surprised she kicked cancer's butt at one point. Such a little tuffy!

I'll never forget her top note on a pile of books that Mrs. Josephs brought to me when I was in hospital. So encouraging and inspiring as always!

May she rest in peace.
