James Harris Obituary

James E. Harris Jr., 90, of Latrobe, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2025 in Independence Health Latrobe Hospital. He was born Aug. 21, 1934 in Latrobe, the son of the late James E. Harris Sr. and Loretta M. (Roble) Harris. Jim was a 1952 graduate of Latrobe High School, where his school friends fondly called him "Wheaties", a nickname that he would carry the rest of his life. He was an avid roller skater and a regular at the Latrobe Roller Garden, where he met his wife, Bonnie. He competed in Roller Dance all over the tri-state area, including the State meet at the Latrobe Roller Garden in 1960. Jim was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a Radio Operator and as a drum player in the Army band, while stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. Prior to retirement in 1996, he was employed as a Design Draftsman for Kennametal, Inc. with 44 years of service. After retirement, he worked for a number of years at the Hartman-Graziano Funeral Home. He also worked part-time as a bartender for the Latrobe Elks and at private parties. He was an active member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Latrobe where he was a former Cub Scout Master and a member of the church golf league. He was also a member and past commander of the Thomas B. Anderson American Legion Post 515, and a member of the Latrobe Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 01188. In his younger years, Jim served as an equipment manager for Latrobe Midget Football and coached baseball in Teener League and coached Junior Pro Basketball and Wrestling. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his son, James S. "Jay" Harris in August of 2024, He is survived by his loving wife of over 67 years Yvonne L. "Bonnie" (Hamilton) Harris who he married on Valentine's Day 1958; his daughter, Linda D. Kozemchok and her husband, Bob; a stepson, Harry D. "Skip" Shawley; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2025, in HARTMAN-GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 1500 Ligonier Street, Latrobe. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2025, in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 331 Weldon St., Latrobe. Interment will follow in Unity Cemetery. My sympathy to Jim´s family. We were classmates at Latrobe high school.. His life was so meaningful with all of the accomplishments. And later years, I will see him quite often greeting the people as he open the door always pleasant. May God bless Jim´s family and friends. Joan Bell Cogan.
