Marlene D. (Blend) Bookheimer fell asleep in the arms of our Lord Monday, Nov. 22, 2021, surrounded by members of her family. She was born Dec. 6, 1933, in North Versailles, Allegheny County, a daughter of the late Mary (Cunningham) and Walter Blend. Married to the late Donald L. Bookheimer for 45 years before his death, their commitment to each other set a standard for the family. She deeply loved her family and was so very proud of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, niece and nephew. She always said she was blessed to have her family so near and have the love they so readily gave her. Her home was the gathering place for family and friends, and was filled with food, games, laughter and sometimes chaos. Marlene had many talents, not least of which was planning an event or party. Family and friends will miss the great times we had together due to her efforts. She was dedicated to her church, West Hempfield Presbyterian (WHPC), where she was a member of the choir for 43 years, a member and officer in Presbyterian Women's Association, a deacon, a Bible school teacher and an expert chocolate maker/instructor. She participated in providing funeral luncheons, election buffets and co-chaired the WHPC 50th Anniversary Celebration. Marlene was a 60-year resident of Greenridge, the fourth home in the plan. She was a charter member of the Greenridge Association and the Greenridge Garden Club, and bowled in the Greenridge Bowling League for 24 years. While a member of the West Hempfield PTA, the first playground equipment was delivered to her driveway. Always an active part of her children's lives, she chaperoned dances and Proms, church youth club events and participated in their choir and basketball activities. Marlene loved sports, particularly football and basketball. Vacations were often the highlight of the year where she could swim, visit and cook for her family. Well written novels were a passion. Marlene's work life included positions at Household Finance, and in the Hempfield Schools. She also owned small businesses over the years. Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald L. Bookheimer; granddaughter, Lana Elaine Hendershot; and sister-in-law, Janet Blend. She is survived by her children, LuAnn (Bill) Hendershot, of Morgantown, W.Va., Diane (Bill) Uhlig, of Johnstown, Donald Bruce (Cheryl) Bookheimer, of Greensburg, and Laurie Jo Bookheimer, of Hempfield Township, with whom she resided; grandchildren, Jenna Hendershot, Ian Hendershot, Elyse Uhlig, Mara (Daniel) Fenton, Julia (Corey) Kuhns, Lynsey Bookheimer and Alan Bookheimer; great-grandchildren, Steven Bartnicki, Rose Bartnicki and Hadley Fenton; and twin brothers, Ronald (Sally) Blend, of North Huntingdon, and Richard Blend, of North Versailles. Friends and family will be received from 10 a.m. until noon Friday at the WILLIAM SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 521 Main St., Irwin, 724-863-1200. Masks will be required to be worn at the visitation and services. A funeral service will be at noon Friday at the West Hempfield Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Penn Lincoln Memorial Park in North Huntingdon Township. Memorial contributions can be made to the Bookheimer family or the Norwin Public Library, 100 Caruthers Lane, Irwin, PA 15642. For online condolences, please visit www.snyderfuneralservices.com.
